Overwatch 2 has mostly been on the decline after hitting a player count peak back in January, but that might be turning around. Season 10 is just kicking off, bringing a new event and a new Hero to discover.
If you're curious about how strong the player base is, here are the details we know about how the game is faring right now.
Player count for Season 10
These counts are estimated because Blizzard doesn’t release its player number figures directly, but according to Active Player, Overwatch 2 has had an active player count of 23,688,512 users in the last 30 days.
This is a small jump of around 300,000 players over March, the first increase since the game's peak in January. While ActivePlayer considers all platforms, it's essentially still an estimate, as not all platforms are open about their player bases.
For something more concrete though, we can look at SteamCharts, which uses the official Steam numbers. Coming into March 2024, Overwatch 2 on Steam has seen an average of 26,511 players daily, with a peak of 41,887.
This is also only the Steam figures, and considering it was out for a year before launching there, many players will still use Battle.net.
Daily player count
While the monthly averages have been on a decline until now, the average daily player count seems to be heading in the opposite direction. With the boost of players the game saw in January, the average daily player count jumped from around 3.5 million to over 6 million.
This number has only increased, with the average daily player count sitting around 6.4 million. It seems that while the monthly player number may decline, there's no shortage of players jumping in day after day. If you were worried about matchmaking times suffering, you should be okay.
What do these figures mean?
Despite a previous spike in numbers in Overwatch 2 thanks to the introduction of Mauga, the veneer seems to have gradually dissipated, with the player count for Season 9 seeing a steep decline.
This may be a result of some of the integral gameplay changes that have been made at the start of this season, including a passive-healing mechanic for all classes that players have argued may be making healers redundant.
Additionally, Blizzard's reputation has taken a pretty big hit thanks to the lingering spectre of Bobby Kotick's reputation despite his departure and a significant number of layoffs from Microsoft since its purchase of Activision Blizzard.
With this slight uptick in players coming into season 10, the promise of the new character Venture might have brought some players back to the game. Whether this trend will continue and those players will stick around, remains to be seen.
What was Overwatch 2's player count at launch?
Overwatch 1 previously hit 7 million players in its first week and became Blizzard's fastest-selling console game of all time. Meanwhile, Overwatch 2 is reported to have had over 37 million players during its first month, according to an Activision Q3 earnings report.
Activision is usually tight-lipped about the exact player count, but this information is safe to assume according to the report and the tweet from the official Overwatch account listed above.
