Unexpected Server Error And Game Server Connection Failed In Overwatch 2: What Do They Mean?
Players have been hit with both “unexpected server error” and “game server connection failed” since Overwatch 2’s launch. There seems to be no pattern as to when this may happen and is due to a few varying factors.
The first is the number of players trying to get into the game at once. Whilst the original Overwatch was popular, turning the game into a free-to-play experience has unsurprisingly invited many, many new players to check it out. This has resulted in multiple server issues since the game opened up to everyone.
Another reason is due to numerous DDoS attacks since Overwatch 2’s official launch. For those that don’t know, DDoS is known as a Distributed Denial-of-Service attack, in which a cyber-attack is made to disrupt the service it’s targeting. Unfortunately, Overwatch 2 has become a victim of these, but key members of the development team have declared on social media they are working hard to rectify the issues.
Can You Fix Unexpected Server Error And Game Server Connection Failed In Overwatch 2?
Since the problems are all server-side, there is no fix or workaround for this. It obviously helps to ensure your connection is stable as best it can be, but in terms of avoiding the problem entirely, it’s not currently possible.
As developer Blizzard works to improve the game, we will likely see these messages less often until they become a completely rare occurrence. As it stands, it’s best to probably expect these errors for a few days until the player numbers settle and server issues are ironed out.
