Overwatch 2 has a regular influx of new players, which means there are likely many people looking for the best beginner characters to play.

Overwatch 2 was released globally in October 2022, and since then, the free-to-play FPS title has been growing continuously. As more and more players are venturing into the game, some are getting confused about which hero they should play.

Although Overwatch 2 isn't a difficult game to learn if you've played other FPS titles before, selecting the right character can still be daunting as the game has over 36 characters. Therefore, we've compiled a list of the best Overwatch 2 heroes for beginners to help new players kick off their journey.

Best Overwatch 2 heroes for beginners

As a beginner, it’s worth noting that Overwatch 2 heroes are categorised into three different roles: Tank, Damage, and Support. Players will have the option to select a character from any of these roles before the match. With that said, here’s the list of the easiest heroes to play in Overwatch 2.

Soldier 76 (Damage)

Soldier 76 is a versatile character that is pretty easy to learn for beginners. The hero is equipped with an assault rifle that deals significant damage at close and medium ranges. On top of that, Soldier 76’s Helix Rockets ability launches a volley of explosive rockets, which allows the hero to deal with enemies at a distance.

While its damage has been slightly nerfed in Overwatch 2, it still provides consistent DPS, making it one of the best among the DPS heroes. It is recommended to pair Soldier 76 with a robust tank in a strategic location to gain control of the battlefield and create opportunities for flanking.

Brigitte (Support)

Brigitte is a support hero that can be incredibly powerful when played correctly. The character utilises an unorthodox healing method through her repair pack, which can restore up to 110 health over a duration of 2 seconds. The ability can be used three times on a cooldown and is particularly effective for healing ally DPS flankers or as a supplementary source of healing when the primary support is insufficient.

If players select Brigitte for battle during matches, it is worth noting that they should be positioned alongside the tanks on the front lines. This is because Brigitte has the ability to heal nearby allies by attacking enemies with her melee weapon, making it a beneficial tactic for the team to remain nearby.

Roadhog (Tank)

Roadhog is a tank hero with a massive health pool of 700 HP. He is an excellent hero for beginners as he can take a lot of damage, and his self-healing ability, Take a Breather, makes him incredibly durable.

His primary fire is a short-range shotgun blast that deals significant damage, while his secondary fire can be used to take out enemies at medium to long range. Roadhog's hook ability can be devastating if used correctly, as it can pull enemies out of position and set them up for easy eliminations.

However, be careful when using Chain Hook on opposing tanks, as you might actually be doing them a favour by bringing them closer to your team. Instead, try using it to pull in squishier targets like enemy DPS or supports.

Mercy (Healer)

Mercy is a support hero that is perfect for beginners. Her abilities are straightforward, and she is incredibly effective in keeping her teammates alive. Mercy’s Caduceus Staff ability can be used to heal her teammates, while her Caduceus Blaster can damage enemies.

The character’s Guardian Angel ability allows her to quickly fly to a teammate's location, making her incredibly mobile. Finally, her ultimate boosts her healing and damage output, making her an excellent choice for turning the tide of a battle.
