Much of your time in Starfield is spent out in the cosmos, so with that, knowing how to escape space combat is a skill everyone should master.

This is because it's easy to get overwhelmed during space combat in the game, and if you don't know how to flee properly, you could lose a ton of your Starfield progress as you're forced to start over again from a previous checkpoint - so here's how you can escape mid-fight.

How can you escape space combat?

The only way to escape space combat in Starfield is to Grav Jump, as it allows you to warp to another system entirely and completely escape a fight.

When you find your ship in an unfavourable situation, your first instinct is probably to try and outrun your attackers using your boost and other evasive manoeuvres. Enemy ships in Starfield are extremely persistent though, and Grav Jumping is your main move here.

This is because you can't fast-travel during combat, so landing on a nearby planet or jumping to another planet in the same system won't save you either.

How to Grav Jump in Starfield

To initiate a Grav Jump, all you need to do is open your Starmap and select a different system. Now, set the course for the new system and trigger the Grav Jump.

If you have enough power allocated to your ship's Grav Drive, the Grav Jump begins moments after you return to the game from the pause menu.

If you don't have any power in your Grav Drive, you will receive a warning that the Grav Jump is pending. If this happens, you must quickly divert power from other systems on your ship to your Grav Drive. The more power in your Grav Drive, the faster you can escape space combat and get to safety.

Overall, retreating from a fight in space is relatively easy, but it's not the most straightforward process (and the game never explains how to do it, either!) The next time you find yourself in a sticky situation, divert some power to your Grav Drive, set course for another system, and hightail it out of there with a Grav Jump!
