If you're wondering how to join the UC Vanguard in Starfield, we have you covered with a full explainer below on how to find the UC Vanguard and pass the exam.

Starfield has many factions and the UC Vanguard is one of the first you'll meet. The UC Vanguard, short for United Colonies Vanguard, can be found in New Atlantis.

Luckily, the quest you have to complete in order to join them is quite simple. We'll walk you through each step of the orientation exam so you can get started on your UC Vanguard journey in the game.

How do you join the UC Vanguard in Starfield?

To join the UC Vanguard in Starfield, head to the MAST District in New Atlantis and follow these steps:

  • Head up the ramp leading out from the public transport and turn around
  • You should see a giant building with MAST above it, and “UC” on the wall inside
  • Inside this building, you can speak to Commander John Tuala
  • He will give you a quest called Supra Et Ultra and tell you how to register for the UC Vanguard
  • Go to the elevator and head to the Vanguard Orientation Hall
  • Go to the monitor and interact with it
  • Agree with the terms then head through the door to the Orientation Hall.
  • Feel free to listen to any of the UC history along the way.

To complete the UC Vanguard exam in Starfield you’ll have to take part in a simulation. The UC will test your abilities to make sure you’re ready to join. You’ll be tasked with taking down three tiers of enemy ships.

We recommend prioritising lasers and ballistic weapons, as well as your shields, to beat the three waves of ships necessary to complete the exam. It’s worth a quicksave before you enter the simulation just in case you don’t make it the first time.

When you’re done with all three just exit the exam - you can continue to improve your score, but it’s not necessary. Head back to Tuala at his desk and he’ll tell you how well you did in the exam. Afterwards, follow him outside to swear your oath.

When you’ve sworn your oath to Tuala you’ll have completed the introductory quest to the UC Vanguard. He’ll give you a probationary mission to complete, but you’ll be considered a new recruit in the Vanguard. Now you can start the rest of the faction questline in Starfield as a member of the UC Vanguard!
