God of War: Ragnarok Valhalla endings explained
God of War: Ragnarok's Valhalla DLC has its own story and an interesting ending. While God of War: Ragnarok saw Atreus find himself and come to an understanding of who he is, Kratos has mostly been stuck in the past.
With this new chapter added to the game, we get to see Kratos on his own, tackling his inner self. Here is what happens when Kratos sets sail for Valhalla.
SPOILER WARNING: As you can probably imagine, this article contains major spoilers for the Valhalla mode, as well as some for the main game.
The plot & ending of GoW Ragnarok: Valhalla
The story begins with Kratos and Mimir heading for Valhalla. We later learn that an unsigned letter with a challenge to "face the past" was sent to Kratos, telling him to come to Valhalla, and so he has. Inside he is met with challenges from his past, reminders of his time in Greece as the tyrannical God of War, and even a run-in with his old pal Helios, the God of the Sun.
Eventually, Kratos comes face to face with Tyr, the real Tyr this time and the one who sent the letter. Tyr invited Kratos to Valhalla to help him face his past, understand it, and make peace with it. Through their repeated battles, Kratos gains more and more clarity.
Click to enlargeTyr shows Kratos a set of giant doors, behind which lies Kratos' greatest demon. After besting Tyr multiple times and gaining a greater understanding of himself, Kratos builds up the strength to open those doors and face the personification of his past.
Kratos is faced with his younger self, sitting on the throne as the God of War. Moving on from this life has been Kratos' greatest challenge, and now that Freya wants him to aid in leading the Nine Realms, he is faced with the terrifying prospect of becoming that god once more.
Through facing his past, Kratos realises he is responsible for all the evil he has done, but he is also responsible for what he does now. He fears that should he lose everything again as he once did, he will once again become that monster. However, he also comes to understand that he has hope in him, and that hope can carry him through.
Whatever is to come next for Kratos, completing the ending of Valhalla unlocks the trophy 'God of Hope', a title he very well might hold going forward.
Valhalla's secret ending
Click to enlargeThere is more to be learned from Valhalla, which many are referring to as the mode's "secret ending". In truth, as it is a rogue-like mode, you can continue playing after the ending and there is indeed more to learn. Specifically, more for Mimir and Sigrun to learn.
As Kratos has been journeying through Valhalla, Mimir has been with him. He mentions early on that he might have said something that upset Sigrun, who is quite in love with Mimir. Essentially, when Sigrun declares her feelings for Mimir, he tells her that he can never be what she needs.
This dismissal of her feelings rightly upsets Sigrun, who comes to Kratos and Mimir's aid in Valhalla, potentially jeopardising her own place in the afterlife. As the story continues, both Mimir and Sigrun do quite a bit of soul-searching. Mimir recognises how foolish his actions were, and that if he really does want the best for Sigrun, he should not have dismissed her feelings for him so quickly.
Sigrun too does some growing as a person in this time, coming to realise that happiness is not something she should seek from outside of herself. After many years in service, Sigrun decides she must go and find out who she really is. She departs on her journey of self-discovery alone, with a promise to return to Mimir as a better, truer version of herself.
