God of War Ragnarok can be a tricky game, but thankfully there are a handful of difficulty options for players to choose from. With the last God of War game releasing in 2018, gamers are hotly anticipating the conclusion of Kratos' story arc. While the combat mechanics of God of War are a sight to behold, not everyone may enjoy the challenge that the game can present. Here is an explanation of the difficulty settings available in God of War Ragnarok, and how you can tailor them to your play style.

In a step away from the last game, there are now five difficulty options in God of War Ragnarok - there were only four in the first game. These range from incredibly easy to incredibly hard, so there should be something for everyone. Here is the full list:

  • Give Me Story - This is essentially the easiest difficulty in God of War Ragnarok. Enemies can be felled easily, leaving you free to enjoy the stories at your own pace.
  • Give Me Grace - This is the next step up from easy, letting some enemies offer a little more challenge but ultimately leaning towards a more casual experience.
  • Give Me Balance - Think of this as the 'Normal' difficulty and the way that the developers intend for most players to enjoy the game. Enemies will strike a fine balance between being difficult but fair.
  • Give Me No Mercy - This game mode is for those that feel they have already mastered the combat of God of War and are looking for a bit more of a challenge.
  • Give Me God Of War - The highest difficulty setting returns in God of War Ragnarok, serving as the ultimate challenge for those that wish to be punished. Enemies will take Kratos down in only a few hits, so you'll need to be on the top of your game to finish Ragnarok on this difficulty.

For the most part, the difficulty settings in God of War Ragnarok are very similar to those of the original. However, one big difference is that you can now lower the difficulty from 'Give Me God of War'. Previously, if you started a playthrough in the 'God of War' difficulty, you couldn't alter it during a playthrough. You'd need to start from the very beginning to play with a lower difficulty.

Now, players are able to lower their difficulty from 'Give Me God Of War'. However, they won't be able to raise it again once they have done so. It's possible to switch between the lowest four difficulty settings at will, but raising the bar to the highest level is not possible.
