God of War Ragnarok Ratatoskr is an adorable ally to the main characters who appears throughout the game. God of War Ragnarok is fully steeped in Norse mythology and as such, the messenger squirrel has to make an appearance. Ratatoskr is an important part of Norse mythology, especially regarding the Aesir and Ragnarok. Here is everything you need to know about God of War Ragnarok Ratatoskr.

Mythology Of The Character

As mentioned, Ratatoskr is a messenger in Norse mythology. Somewhat similar to Hermes in Greek mythology, Ratatoskr's role is to quickly travel throughout Yggdrasil, the World Tree. Seemingly, his main role was to ferry messages back and forth between the eagle, Hraesvelgr, at the top of the tree, and the serpent, Nidhoggr, who eats the roots of the tree.

Ratatoskr is portrayed as a squirrel, as many important figures in Norse mythology are represented by animals, symbolic of their nature. Ratatoskr is fittingly represented as a squirrel, both because he spends most of his time climbing up and down a tree, and also because he is a simple messenger, not an aggressive or dangerous being.

His Appearance In The Game

Ratatoskr makes his first proper appearance in God of War Ragnarok, but he was present in the previous game as well. In that game, Atreus could summon a spectral representation of Ratatoskr to aid them by bringing items. It is only in Ragnarok that Kratos and Atreus meet the real Ratatoskr, who is much more pleasant than his ghostly counterpart. His voice has also changed, in the previous game he was voiced by Troy Baker, but in Ragnarok he is portrayed by Sung Won Cho.

In the game, Ratatoskr is who Kratos and Atreus go to so they can use Yggdrasil to access the other realms. Ratatoskr is also very knowledgeable, as you might expect a messenger to be. As such, he offers plenty of information to Kratos and Atreus and delights in educating them.

That is it for our God of War Ragnarok Ratatoskr guide. For more info on the game, check out God of War Ragnarok: How tall is Kratos?
