Destiny 2 poison subclass is a long-standing rumour that may be coming to the game in a future expansion. Destiny 2 threw the rule book out the window when the first Darkness subclass was introduced, Stasis. Since then, there has been no mention of further Darkness powers but it seems only too likely that they are in the pipeline. Here is what we know so far about the possibility of a Destiny 2 Poison subclass.

Destiny 2 Poison Subclass: Why Poison?

Part of the reason why a Destiny 2 poison subclass rumour has persisted for so long, is because poison effects have been in the game for a long time. The first weapon of this kind was Thorn, which has been in the game since the original Destiny. Since then, we have seen more weapons join this category, such as the Necrochasm, Touch of Malice, and more recently the Osteo Striga. While there has not been an official poison subclass, powers, or weapon type, poison has felt like an unofficial elemental type for some time now.

These poison effects have been a part of the game for a long time, and generally always come from some malevolent source, Thorn itself was originally the weapon of a Guardian who turned to Darkness. Poison makes sense as a Darkness power, and even the fact that poison effects are green would help differentiate it from the other subclasses.

Destiny 2 Poison Subclass: New Information

With the events of Season of the Haunted, we have learned some new information that has implications regarding a potential future Darkness subclass. Throughout the season, there has been much mention of a Darkness substance called Egregore. Egregore is a fungus that comes from the Darkness, that seems to spread between dimensions. Egregore spores have been used in the game to pass through barriers, but this Egregore has been spreading and becoming more prevalent.

Following the finale of the current story and completion of the Catharsis mission, players were rewarded with the Eidolon Ghost shell. The lore tab for this shell tells us that 'Egregore is a physical manifestation of the Darkness, like Stasis, but unlike Stasis it appears to be an "impure" manifestation'. Considering Stasis is our one and only Darkness power source so far, it is hard to ignore the implication of the game referring to Egregore as 'like Stasis'.

There are a lot of potential ways to take this information on board. All of this information on Egregore seems to clearly indicate there is more to come, and it almost seems a safe bet that it will be the source of our next Darkness subclass. With that said, what kind of power source would Egregore be?

Considering it is a Darkness power, and one based on a fungus that grows, spreads and infects everything around it, it is not a complete reach to suggest this could indeed be the poison subclass players have theorised for a long time. Now, the basis for the poison subclass rumours and this Egregore substance are pretty far removed from each other, so it seems unlikely that all of these potential indicators will somehow be tied together.

Whatever an Egregore Darkness subclass might look like, it would definitely be gross. With a fungus-based powerset, you would have to expect some kind of status effects. Whether that be to weaken the enemy, disorient them, or poison them. We may not know more any time soon, but if there is a new subclass on the way, it would most likely come with the next expansion, Lightfall, in early 2023.

Destiny 2 Poison Subclass: Leaked Video

Recently, a video that was posted on the Destiny Leaks Twitter page that they claim comes from a Bungie employee's art station account shows us something interesting. The indicators in the lower left of the screen that show things like currently equipped weapons, ammo, abilities and your super, look a bit different. The layout is the same, but the colour scheme is unusual.

These icons change colour depending on the currently equipped subclass; orange for Solar, blue for Arc, and so on. Currently, there is no subclass denoted by a green colour scheme, but this video shows us a set of green class icons. Now, they could just be a placeholder or something that is being played around with internally. However, it isn't just the colour of the icons, but the icons themselves that are different.

The super ability icon is completely unique, and does not appear to be a simple recolour over an existing icon. Also, this Titan appears to have three stacks of their melee ability. Whether that is further evidence of internal testing or a feature of this new subclass, is hard to say. Still, with all the rumours over the years that Poison or something to that effect will be a Darkness subclass, and the colour green being the fairly obvious choice for such a subclass, this all feels a bit too close to the truth to be mere coincidence.

That is everything we know about a potential Destiny 2 poison subclass, and about this new Egregore substance. For more on the game, check out our Destiny 2 Calus bobblehead locations guide.
