Amongst other materials such as the Exotic Ciphers and glimmer, the ascent shard is crucial to purchase exotic weapons from the vault.
However, this isn't it's only function, as Destiny 2 ascendant shards are needed to upgrade your certain weapons and gear to masterwork level. You'll also need a bunch of Destiny 2 legendary shards and enhancement cores, so be sure you are stocked up on them before trying to masterwork your gear.
Destiny 2 Ascendant Shards: How To Get Ascendant Shards

You can only hold 10 ascendant shards at a time in your inventory and further 10 the Postmaster. However, the following activities should reward you with Destiny 2 ascendant shards:
- Crucible, Gambit, Vanguard Strikes, and Trials of Osiris Resets
- Master and Grandmaster Nightfalls
- The Destiny 2 Season Pass
- Augmented Obsession Triumph
- Dismantling Masterworked Exotic Armor
- Season of the Lost Memorial
Completing any of the above events should gradually and eventually reward you with ascendant shard materials. However, if you have a horde of materials an additional solution is to purchase ascendant shards off of either Ada-1 or Banshee-44. We wouldn't entirely recommend it since it will tear through your resources, but if you are in the need for a final ascendant shard then the option is always there.
