While Sony's Venom movies have pushed for a darker and more adult tone (although still missing that elusive R rating), it sounds like Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 could be taking a leaf out of this book. We always knew it would be a bigger sequel, but is it about to be bloodier as well?

Insomniac restored our faith in Marvel video games with 2018's Spider-Man, and while Marvel's Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy have tried to recapture this lightning in the bottle, they largely failed. Much like Respawn raised the bar with Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, there are high hopes Spider-Man 2 will do the same.

Is Spider-Man 2 a secret horror game?

Swinging across the New York City skyline in the first game was a joy, with Spider-Man being a family-friendly affair where you chased pigeons. About the scariest aspect was sneaking away from Tombstone, but just like Rocksteady's Arkham trilogy sometimes went full horror, sources claim Spider-Man 2 will follow suit.

Responding to a new video from YouTuber Evan Filarca, user nerdycollector209 claimed to have spoken to Miles Morales voice actor Nadji Jeter. Apparently, Jeter advised playing Spider-Man 2 in the dark with a headset because it's "a lot more scary" than the first game and 2020's Miles Morales

Filarca's video focused on Jeter's appearance at the 2022 SacAnime Summer panel, where the voice actor promised symbiotes are "going to be everywhere." This has led to rampant speculation that Spider-Man 2 is a spiritual successor to Activision's Spider-Man: Web of Shadows from 2008.

Even though Web of Shadows isn't classed as the best Spidey game of all time, it had an interesting storyline and was definitely dark. Responding to the idea of a Symbiote invasion of NYC, user kevinplantz12 added, "I've been sworn to secrecy, but you're not far off" - saying they'd heard similar from Jeter and Venom actor Tony Todd.

We already know Spider-Man 2 will be darker

Considering Tony Todd is known for his role as Candyman in the horror series of the same name, we could've guessed things would be darker this time around. The star has already teased his "mind-blowing" role, and as Venom is known for biting people's heads off, we hope we see this in action.

You might remember some outlandish story leaks we originally wrote off. They spoke about Peter and Miles hunting a serial killer and the possible use of multiple symbiotes, which all fit with the above. The Arkham games had horrors like Man-Bat and Professor Pyg, so now, it's Insomniac's turn to add the scares.

As Venom is typically one of Spider-Man's scariest enemies, we're excited about what the team can do with the character. Put it this way, though, we doubt the title can be classed as a full-blown horror or introduce a pant-wetting section like Resident Evil Village's House Beneviento.
