When looking at The Game Awards 2023's nominees, it's fair to say that they're so impressive you can gauge just how amazing this year has been for video games. For many, you can see the event's losses just as much as if you were looking at its successes.

The competition was so fierce that the chart-topping Tears of the Kingdom came away with just a single award. Elsewhere, the barnstormer that was Capcom's Resident Evil 4 remake didn't get a scrap.

There's one other game that was lined up for greatness, which also came away with nothing and left fans going to war. Rather than turning their anger to the powers that be, they're turning it towards each other and Spider-Man 2's development team at Insomniac Games.

Despite being one of The Game Awards' GOTY nominees, Spider-Man 2 came away with no trophies at the annual awards. Even though there were plenty of contenders in all categories, nothing worked in Spider-Man's favour. For some, they're aiming their complaints at Insomniac Games for apparently not doing enough.

"Spider-Man 2 was nominated seven times and got ZERO awards," shares one post to the SpidermanPS4 subreddit, as players smoke the game in the comments. "Deserved," says another player. "Hopefully Insomniac will do better for SM3."

"I couldn’t agree more," added someone else. "Was genuinely too safe and cookie cutter of a sequel. And in many ways it was a step back surprisingly from the first game (primarily story and side content) which is never a good thing for a sequel."

Everyone suddenly hates Spider-Man 2 - what happened?

The subreddit arguments are getting ugly, mostly because the critical and fan love for Spider-Man 2 seems to have run out. The harshest critics have lambasted the game for feeling short or underbaked, but for the most part, players have been loving it.

Of course, it's the same discourse we've seen levelled at Starfield, with some comments in the thread presumably coming from salty Xbox players. When Spider-Man was nominated for GOTY, Starfield players were outraged that the Xbox exclusive was snubbed from TGA.

Spider-Man might be feeling the pressure of The Game Awards' tough competition, but at the end of the day, we all know that Insomniac Games is one of the best dev teams out there. We doubt the team needs a big hunk of metal to prove it - even if it would have been nice for Peter and Miles to soar high at TGA.
