You might remember when Insomniac Games was hit by that devastating ransomware attack - revealing the developer's grand plans for a Marvel Gaming Universe through to 2030. Seemingly spoiling the surprise of Marvel's Wolverine and a proposed Spider-Verse game, it was up there with the GTA 6 leaks in terms of reveals.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has now had another major surprise spoiled, but this time, it looks like it's Insomniac's fault rather than anonymous hackers. Like with 2018's Spider-Man, we hoped an impressive roadmap of post-release content was on the way. Unfortunately for Insomniac, it might've spoiled its first DLC itself.

The end of Spider-Man 2 left plenty of dangling plot threads in terms of potential villains and where we go next. Even though the original game already did the Sinister Six, the post-credit scene neatly teased an even more dangerous partnership in Spider-Man 3. However, the first DLC looks like it'll focus on someone new.

Spider-Man 2's 1.002.000 version added a tonne of features, including New Game Plus and new suits like the Hellfire Gala. However, it also included the developer-only debug menu. Players could turn on cheats, skip through the story, and see future chapters. It's here that players discovered a DLC mention of Beetle.

Beetle being the big bad of a DLC isn't too surprising, especially as dataminers previously discovered a hint that the Janice Lincoln era of the villain would somehow feature. As the daughter of the villainous Tombstone (who we've already met in Insomniac's world), Janice was already neatly queued.

Insomniac warns against using the debug menu

As you can imagine, Insomniac is doing some serious damage control right now and has asked you NOT to access the debug. Promising a hotfix in the immediate future, we're also told that using the debug menu could corrupt your saves and trophies. That still hasn't stopped you from having a poke inside.

It's important to note that not all characters mentioned in the files will end up being used, although it's looking increasingly likely that Beetle could be the first DLC villain. 2018's Spider-Man had three main episodes in its The City That Never Sleeps post-release adventure, so we're hoping for more of the same.

There have been swirling rumours that we'll pick up the story of Cletus Kasady/Carnage, although others think he's being saved for Spider-Man 3. Despite having covered so many villains already, Spidey's rogue's gallery means there are plenty more foul foes waiting in the wings.
