It's been five years since Insomniac Games wove a web of wonder with Marvel's Spider-Man, and while we've known for years that a sequel was on the way, Spider-Man 2 is finally slithering into view. However, as symbiotes extend their tendrils into the world of Peter Parker and Miles Morales, fans aren't happy.

Given the hype surrounding Spider-Man 2, we're not surprised Insomniac has been taking its time to deliver something as equally ground-breaking as the original. But alongside a lack of a solid release date and a confirmed wholly single-player experience, players are mad at the look of Venom.

Spider-Man 2 players argue over Venom's 'slimy' look

We know Candyman's Tony Todd is voicing Venom in Spider-Man 2, although he was mysteriously MIA in the gameplay shown at Sony's PlayStation Showcase. Instead, we seemingly got confirmation that the Symbiote will attach itself to Peter Parker - giving us the Black Suit from 1984's Amazing Spider-Man #252.

Clearly missing the point of what the alien symbiote is supposed to be like, one comic book die-hard shared a tweet slamming the "slimy" look of Venom in Spider-Man 2. For those who watched Spider-Man 3 or the Venom movies, you'll know they went down the route of the symbiote being an organism that attaches itself.

It's true that when Peter Parker first came into contact with the Symbiote Suit, he thought it was a black variant of his outfit instead of an alien looking for a host, but just like Insomniac took liberties with villains like Vulture and Rhino, we were always expecting a Venom revamp.

One grumbled, "Yeah this might be almost as bad as that MCU concept art with all the stupid veins," while another added, "The game is very clearly not even remotely trying to hide the fact that it's alive." A third critic fumed, "Y’all never read the comics and only saw the movies and it shows."

Getting behind the suit, one supporter wrote, "Worst criticism for the suit yet. It's an alien life-form. It's not supposed to look like velvet." Another concluded, "Bro, why are you mad? 👀 It's a living being that came from Oscorp (at least in this continuity). It's going to look 'slimy.'"

What Symbiote powers are there in Spider-Man 2?

It's hard to figure out what's going on in terms of storyline, but at least the Spider-Man 2 gameplay gave us a better look at some of the new powers we'll be trying out. Just like Miles got his bio-electric venom blast and covert camouflage in Miles Morales, it looks like Peter Parker is getting an upgrade.

From what we saw, there are a series of new symbiote moves. We saw an example of the suit's tendrils brutally slamming a player into the ground, while another move had symbiote tendrils create a shield to protect Parker from an attack. There was one HUD icon that wasn't used, suggesting at least one more is available.

There will always be those who will criticise the work of any video game, with other critics saying Spider-Man 2 doesn't look like a truly PS5 game. To be honest, we've been waiting long enough and will take what we can at this point. How can you moan about Tony Todd as Venom?
