With Hogwarts Legacy, you can fully customise your own wand, but if you've always dreamed of living as the master of death in Hogwarts Legacy, look no further than the Elder Wand.

One of the fun aspects of Hogwarts Legacy is being able to connect your game to your Warner Bros account and import your Hogwarts house and wand directly from the Harry Potter fan club. Doing so will get you the House Fan-atic School Robe and the Beaked Skull Mask gear items.

That's not all, though, as below you'll find all you need to know to make the Elder Wand in Hogwarts Legacy to set you up as the most powerful witch or wizard in the game.

How to get the Elder Wand

If you would like to ensure you get sorted with the Elder Wand on the Wizarding World fan page, you can input the following answers during the wand sorting.

(Note that, unfortunately, the only options for a wand core are the main three. These are Unicorn Hair, Phoenix Feather, and Dragon Heartstring. The Elder Wand traditionally has a Thestral Hair as its core. In this regard, feel free to choose from any of the cores below)

Sadly, you cannot change your wand once you have purchased one from Olivanders in Hogsmeade. You can still acquire the additional add-ons at any point in your playthrough, but the house robes will have the school emblem of whichever house you have been sorted into.

Alternatively, you can create the Elder Wand whilst in Ollivanders. To do so, choose the following options.

  • Wood Type – Elder
  • Length – fourteen and a half inches (this is as close as we can get to the proper Elder Wand length)
  • Flexibility – Unyielding
  • Wand Style – Ringed, Dark Brown
  • Core Type – your choice

What is the Elder Wand?

Hogwarts Legacy, Sophronia Franklin's quiz

The Elder Wand is one of three Deathly Hallows. When combined, the owner of The Deathly Hallows becomes the 'master of death' and essentially the most powerful witch or wizard in the world.

The tale of the Deathly Hallows is first mentioned in the Tales of Beadle the Bard. A fictional author in the Harry Potter universe who wrote bedtime stories for children in the wizarding world previously thought to be fictional.

During the Harry Potter book series, it became clear that the Deathly Hallows was indeed real and Voldemort was in hot pursuit of The Elder Wand, thinking it would make him invincible and be able to overcome the connection between his and Harry's wands. This is due to the Elder Wand containing immeasurable power alongside other wands.

It was said to be created by Death himself and has the unusual property of using Thestral hair for its core. It is well-known in the fandom that Dumbledore acquired the wand during his infamous duel with Grindelwald in 1945, which ended in the dark wizard's imprisonment.

Hogwarts Legacy forays deeper into Elder Wand's past. During 'Professor Weasley's Assignment' where you have to retrieve the Book on Intermediate Transfiguration from the library, Sophronia Franklin will give you a quiz on wizarding history.

If you choose to ask for more difficult questions, she will ask you 'Emeric the Evil was killed in a duel against whom?'

The answer is 'Egbert the Egregious.' Sophronia expands on the answer to this by saying that Emeric gained notoriety for terrorizing villages in the south of England during the Middle Ages whilst he was the master of the Elder Wand.

This is backed up further by Professor Dumbledor's notes on his copy of The Tales of Beadle the Bard. He expands by saying that Emeric was one of the earliest wielders of the Elder Wand to pop up in magical history since the tale of the three brothers.

After Egbert's possession of the Elder Wand, it seems to disappear in history again, until a century later when it fell into the hands of a wizard named Godelot, who was betrayed by his son to gain ownership of the wand. It then follows a bloody trail before it eventually falls into the lap of Harry Potter.

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry uses the Elder Wand to repair his original wand (11 inches, made from holly with a phoenix feather core). The wand was broken during the book, much to Harry's despair. He fixes the wand after the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998, before breaking the Elder Wand and ending its dark history of it once and for all.
