Hogwarts Legacy Microtransactions Explained
The Hogwarts Legacy State of Play in March 2022 was the most information we have received on the game to date, with just under 14 minutes of gameplay footage, including first-looks at explorable locations in Hogwarts. Amongst them, the capture shows that players will be able to use the Room of Requirement to craft ingredients for potions that will take real time to grow and cultivate. This stamped a warning sign in the minds of many, as classic pay-to-skip waiting mechanics are some of the most commonly used forms of micro-transactions, particularly in mobile games. When asked what the role of the Room of Requirement will be on their official page, Portkey Games address this with:
“The Room of Requirement is an important secret of Hogwarts that helps players customize and grow their abilities. We’ll have more details to share at a later time.” The lack of information so far, along with the trailer footage released has led to some fearing the worst.
Warner Bros has had a turbulent history with microtransactions and its players. The most divisive being the implementation of in-game purchases in Shadow of War, a sequel to the Lord of the Rings inspired Shadow of Mordor, which did not have microtransactions and was a hit success. After the criticism it received, Warner Bros consequently removed the microtransactions 6 months after the initial game release.
With the conflicting relationship between what is seen as pay-to-win mechanics and gamers, Community Manager for Avalanche Studios, Chandler Wood was quick to put the rumours to rest. He released a Tweet simply stating:
With many sharing the Tweet and voicing support for this decision, it seems as though Hogwarts Legacy will refrain from traditional mobile money-making practices. Portkey Games further this point on their page by saying:
“Hogwarts Legacy does not have in-game purchases or micro-transactions” So, there we have it. So far, there is no indication that Hogwarts Legacy will have in-game purchases and microtransactions, much to the delight of many fans.
