How To Use the Mastiff Shotgun In Apex Legends

How To Use the Mastiff Shotgun In Apex Legends

The Mastiff Shotgun is one of the most iconic weapons in all of Apex Legends. The Mastiff started out as a supply drop weapon but was later added to the main gun pool in place of the Peacekeeper. This may have been an oversight on the developers’ part though, as the Mastiff seems to be stronger than the Peacekeeper ever was. The Mastiff has become such a prominent part of the game, that the community has joked about renaming Apex Legends to “Mastiff Legends”.

So what makes the Mastiff Shotgun so good? What’s the key to dominating with this signature weapon?

In this guide, we’ll go over the Mastiff’s stats and provide some tips and tricks to using the semi-automatic shotgun. Additionally, we’ll provide a couple of suggestions for secondary weapons to pair with the Mastiff. By the end, readers will have everything they need to excel in the Mastiff meta.

Mastiff Shotgun Apex Legends

What are the stats of the Mastiff in Apex Legends?

The Mastiff fires eight pellets per shot and each pellet deals 11 damage. When fired at the head, each pellet’s damage is multiplied by 1.25, for a total of 14 damage per pellet. If all eight pellets land, the Mastiff is capable of dealing 88 damage to the body per shot and 112 to the head.

The Mastiff’s pellets fire in a horizontal spread. Aiming down sight will reduce the spread and increase accuracy. While aiming down sight, the user will incur a penalty of -10% movement speed. Moreover, the Mastiff has a magazine size of six and fires at a rate of 66 rounds per minute (RPM).

Finally, the Mastiff is capable of partial reloads. This means that players can load a shell and immediately fire it off without the need to reload fully. This is game-changing in intense fights where every second counts and you can’t afford to wait for a full reload.

A general rule of thumb is that non-Fortified opponents with Blue armour or worse will die from two Mastiff shots to the body. Fortified Legends or anyone wearing Purple, Gold, or Red armour will take three body shots to kill.

What are the best attachments for the Mastiff in Apex Legends?

The Mastiff can be equipped with two categories of attachments: Optics and Shotgun Bolts. Shotgun Bolts come in three rarities, Common, Rare, and Epic. These Shotgun Bolts increase the Mastiff’s fire rate by 10%, 15%, and 20% respectively. The base Mastiff has a slow fire rate, so players will want to make sure to grab a Shotgun Bolt whenever possible.

The Mastiff can equip the following optics: 1x Holo, 1x HCOG Classic 1x HCOG "Classic", 2x HCOG Bruiser, 1x-2x Variable Holo, and 1x Digital Threat.

When choosing an Optic, keep in mind that the Mastiff should be used exclusively at close range. Anything over a 1x Optic is unnecessary and may cause more harm than good.

Apex Legends Shotgun Tips

General Tips For Using The Mastiff Shotgun

Use Peek Shots

Peek shooting is when you take a shot, dip back into cover, and then peek and take a second shot. When using automatic guns like SMGs and LMGs, players are forced to stand out in the open to deal damage. With semi-automatic weapons like the Mastiff, this isn’t necessary.

While using a Mastiff, players should line up a shot, fire, and then immediately take cover. Repeat as needed until the enemy is down. Only expose yourself when absolutely necessary.

Peek shooting is an amazing technique for avoiding unnecessary damage. Players using this technique are very difficult to kill.

Take Your Time!

The Mastiff packs an extreme punch, but at the cost of fire rate. The Mastiff is way less forgiving than other guns like the EVA-8 Shotgun or the Spitfire. There’s a pronounced delay between shots and one or two misses could be the difference between life or death.

With this in mind, it’s extremely important to take your time and line up your shots. Don’t try and rapid-fire the Mastiff like it’s an EVA-8. If you can hit all eight pellets, the enemy will go down in just a couple of shots. However, an off-target shot will result in your Mastiff nicking your opponent for mere 22s and 33s.

Aim For The Body And Aim Down Sight

Most gamers have it ingrained in their brain to aim for the head. However, the Mastiff goes against that popular sentiment. The Mastiff’s headshot multiplier is just 1.25. The difference between a headshot and a body shot is not too significant.

Additionally, shots to the limb with a Mastiff deal the same damage as shots to the torso. Don’t risk missing pellets entirely by aiming for the head. The rest of the body is a much easier target.

Lastly, always try to aim down sight. Aiming down sight makes a massive difference in the pellet spread. Even a partial aim-in is preferable to a complete hip-fire.

Apex Legends Shotgun Repeater

What Guns Should I Pair With The Mastiff in Apex Legends?

30-30 Repeater

Apex Legends’ newest gun, the 30-30 Repeater, pairs perfectly with the Mastiff Shotgun. The 30-30 Repeater is extremely formidable at medium to long ranges, but it’s a liability at short range. That’s where the Mastiff comes in. With these two guns, players will have all ranges of engagement covered.

Pick at enemies from afar with the 30-30 Repeater and finish them up close with the Mastiff.

R-301 Carbine

The R-301 fits a role similar to the 30-30 Repeater. With the R-301, players trade damage for fire rate. The R-301 deals less damage per shot, but the high rate of fire more than makes up for it. The R-301 may be the best all-around gun in the game.

The R-301 Carbine performs well at medium to long ranges depending on the sight attached to it. The R-301 can hold its own at short ranges, but it’ll usually lose to an SMG or a shotgun.

Having a Mastiff as backup negates the R-301’s main con. Pair these two guns up and you’ll be ready for any situation.

The Mastiff is the ultimate killing machine in the right hands. Use this guide to master the iconic shotgun and wreak havoc in the Apex Games.
