The goal of every Apex Legends competitor when they head into a match is to take home the victory (most of the time).

How they go about achieving this differs from player to player, with some hunting down enemies like their life depends on it and others taking up power positions in an attempt to pick off unsuspecting foes.

There is another kind of strategy, though, one that's looked down upon by many, and that's "ratting." Some players have taken this "rat" tactic to a new level by glitching inside Respawn Beacons and waiting for foes to approach. Unfortunately, for one squad, the big brain strategy went pear-shaped very quickly.

Apex Legends "rats" are hiding under Respawn Beacons

Taking to the Apex Legends subreddit, user MrRichStarfish decided to showcase a clip of their teammate going to revive them at a beacon. However, once the competitor arrived at the location, a surprise attack awaited them.

After seeing movement underneath the beacon, they noticed three players were crammed underneath and merged inside the device. The opposing squad had clearly glitched into the terrain in an attempt to hide and surprise an unsuspecting victim looking to pull off a revive.

This scheme didn't go to plan, though, as none of them really knew how to aim their guns, and after jumping out to get a kill, they seemed to miss nearly all of their shots.

Is "ratting" an effective strategy in Apex Legends?

In the case above, that's not only ratting but bug abuse, as you're not meant to glitch into terrain in a match. However, for those who are unaware, the rat strategy mainly involves hiding from enemies for the entire match and just looking to survive or pick off random opponents who come into your path.

Common spots for hiding include trees, on top of buildings, or anywhere that's out of sight. While ratting works for getting to high placement, it will never improve your gunskill, and while you're likely to get second and third place regularly, first will rarely be possible.

In addition, ratting has become significantly harder thanks to the armour changes, which require you to farm EVO. So, there's no chance of finding a purple shield and hiding for the entire match anymore - a problem that has long frustrated many in the Apex community.
