How to unlock & complete 'In the Shadow of the Study' in Hogwarts Legacy
If you want to track down the Unforgivable Curses in Hogwarts Legacy, here's how you can unlock and complete In the Shadow of the Study quest.
If you’re on the path of darkness, you’ll want to learn all of the Unforgivable Curses. It’s long been touted to be a part of the game, however, the journey to unlocking them is quite a bit laborious.
In order to unlock these, you’ll have to follow Sebastian Sallow’s quest line, which eventually leads up to In the Shadow of the Study mission. This mission is one of the more interesting in Hogwarts Legacy, and if you want to know how to unlock it and complete it, here’s what you need to do.

How to unlock 'In the Shadow of the Study'
Firstly, you need to complete a variety of prerequisites to unlock this quest. You’ll need to complete all of Sebastian’s quest lineup until this point, which includes the following missions:
- In the Shadow of the Undercroft
- In the Shadow of the Estate
- In the Shadow of the Bloodline
Along with this, make sure you are level 16 and that you’ve also completed The High Keep main quest.
How to complete 'In the Shadow of the Study'
Begin this quest by speaking to Sebastian outside the Slytherin common room, at which point, he will lead you to meet Ominis. You’ll be tasked to open the Slytherin door, which involves you lighting three braziers - two down the hallway and one to the east.
Here’s where the braziers you need to light in are:
Venture inside the newly opened door and use Reparo to create a path forward using the nearby rubble. After speaking to Ominis again, you will venture through another door before being tasked to find a way forward.
At this point, you’ll need to crouch underneath a gate and light up the area using Incendio on a nearby flame. A Slytherin Lock will be presented to you and you need to match the symbols to be the same as the image below:
You’ll then need to complete another Slytherin Lock further on, which can be solved by copying the image below:
Finally, another Slytherin lock will block your progress, which again, can be bypassed by using this combination:
After advancing through these puzzles, you’ll talk to the characters again and learn about the Crucio curse. You also have the opportunity to learn it, which will involve you completing a mini-game to do so.
Pick up the Slytherin spell book inside the Scriptorium, which can be found in front of the giant statue. With the book in hand, return to Sebastian and hand it in. Converse again and leave the Scriptorium before speaking to Ominis again to complete In the Shadow of the Study.
