Adding a gate to your defensive walls in Sons of the Forest gives you an easy way in and out of your fort, provided you know how to make one. Sons of the Forest, much like its predecessor, has some interesting contextual crafting features that can take some getting used to.

Crafting a gate does not require any of the game's rarer resources, but it does require you to know the method. Here is how to make a gate for your defensive walls.

How to build a gate

Making a gate is as simple as bringing a single wooden log to a five-log section of a defensive wall. This method uses Sons of the Forest's contextual crafting system, where the items you can craft can change depending on the situation.

Start off by building your wall as usual with wooden logs. Feel free to build it first, before deciding where to place your gate. With the wall built, you simply need to approach it while holding another wooden log. You should see a diagonal outline appear on the wall, with a prompt to rotate the log. Placing the log here will create a gate out of five of the logs in the wall.

It might take a second after you place the log before you can open the gate, so don't worry if it doesn't open straight away. Also, whichever side the diagonal log is higher on will be the side where the gate opens, so bear that in mind when placing your gate. You can create as many gates as you like this way, you can even create a double gate by placing two gates beside each other.

That is it for our quick guide to building gates. For more, head to our Sons of the Forest homepage where we have guides on difficulty levels, clean water, the modern axe, how to get the pistol, and how to get the new ending.
