Looking forward to League of Legends Season 24, or just curious to know what's changing? Check out this rundown of the brand new season for 2024 including the new Champions heading to the game and some major gameplay overhauls.

There's a lot changing this year, and some particularly exciting Champions and reworks further down the line if you're a fan of Arcane like I am. Read on to find out everything coming to the game this year and beyond.

Season 24 Start Date

League of Legends Season 24 will officially start on January 10th.

The launch will be accompanied by a cinematic video on the same day, which will be similar to the high quality cinematics from past seasons. A teaser for the video showed us a glimpse of Tryndamere.

Map & Gameplay Changes

The season will introduce lots of new gameplay concepts to the Rift, including new Void creatures. Voidgrubs and Voidmites will reside in the Baron pit before Rift Herald spawns, and players can now ride the Herald when its summoned. Baron has also had an overhaul with three different variations.

The biggest change has to be the terrain though. Summoner's Rift has been drastically altered and new terrain has been created to change up the paths you'll take in-game. There are still three lanes and a jungle like usual, but the placement of bushes, rocks and paths have been significantly changed.

Mythic items have also been removed, and lots of items have been changed to create a new item system.

New Champions

The first new League of Legends Champion in Season 24 is Smolder, the Fiery Fledgling, a dragon child who can call his mother to blast the area with fire.

After Smolder is released, fans can expect a mid-range-mage from the Freljord to debut in the game. We don't know much else about this character yet.

Then, after Arcane Season 2 finishes, Ambessa from the popular Netflix show will be coming to LoL as a playable Champion. Ambessa Medarda is the Noxian mother of Mel Medarda, one of the show's original characters not seen in League.

Champion Reworks

The Skarner rework is slated for release in the first half of the year. He's the first of three reworks we know of, with the other two coming in 2025.

One of these reworks will be for a Champion in the Arcane series, though we don't know who yet. They will be reworked at some point after Season 2 of Arcane. The likeliest choices seem to be Singed, Viktor or Vi, but it could also be a Champion we don't currently know will be in Arcane Season 2.

Shyvana will also receive a rework at long last in 2025. She's a long way off, but fans will no doubt be pleased to finally get a new version of this Champion to play as.

On a smaller scale, Lee Sin's ASU will be released in May. ASUs change visuals without significantly altering gameplay. After Lee Sin, Teemo will also receive an ASU.

New Skins

On the skins side of things, we know that Rammus and Olaf will finally receive new skins this year.

New skin thematics include Heavenscale and Primal Ambush. Returning thematics include Faerie Court, PROJECT and Blood Moon.

As for Prestige skins, Rakan, Ezreal, Kindred, Evelynn and Kayle will all be getting one in the first half of 2024.

Additional Features Coming in 2024

Additionally, Vanguard, Riot's anti-cheat system, is being added to League in 2024. Games can now be terminated if a cheater is detected, and cheaters can be hardware banned. Riot assured players that Vanguard doesn't collect additional information that they don't need using Vanguard.

Arena will return in the first half of the year, but this time the number of teams has been doubled. You can play with a total of 16 players now, rather than eight.

Riot also confirmed that a more chilled-out game mode will be heading to League at some point, and that it's currently in the works. We don't know anything else about this unreleased mode.

Champion Mastery has been uncapped, and you can now level mastery levels further. You can read all about the changes here, but in short you can earn rewards for each champ while earning mastery score as usual. The new system will launch near the summer.

That's all we have for Season 24 of League of Legends. Check back in the future for more LoL updates.
