To start the side quest, you need to head to the Carja Camp in No Man’s Land. This settlement is south-east of Stone’s Echo, on the coast of a lake. When you get there, speak to the two Carja Scholars at the back of the camp. They will tell you about how they came here to look for relics, but machines ran them off their dig site. So, your first objective is to head to the site and clear it out.

The dig site is called Jagged Deep Delve, and is south-east of the Carja Camp, on the other side of the lake. Head over there and defeat the machines to clear it out.

Next, you must investigate the underwater ruins nearby. Go west into the water and swim down to the rocks that are lit up. Inside you will find a console, examine it and retrieve the vault key. The key is one of three, and it gives you the coordinates for the next one. Check your map to see where you are headed next.

Your next destination is Dread Bluff, south-west of the dig site. This is a small facility that machines have taken over, so avoid or deal with them as you like. Inside the facility, go to the north-east corner of the central building to find the way inside. Go in, drop down this shaft into the water, then climb up the ladder. Go into the vent to your right, then into the room to find the second vault key at the security console. Once you have it, go back out into the shaft and climb up the wall to reach the higher ladder and climb out.

After picking up the second key you will receive the location of the third key. It is to the west, in a place called Devil’s Slide. Head there and you will find it is another Old World facility, but it is mostly submerged. Swim down to find the door. Pry it open, head inside and pry open the next door around the corner to the left. Inside this room is the next security console, so grab the final vault key and get back outside.

With all three keys, the location of the prototype portable shield is revealed. It is in another facility south of the previous two. Across the lake, to the south, you will see an enclosed area on the map. Head there, and you will discover a clearing with several machines. Again, deal with them as you will, then head to the back of the area and into the facility.

Head down the corridor and on your right you will see three consoles. One for each key, use them and the door will open. Inside you will find a large crate, pry it open and the prototype is yours. Now head back to the Carja Camp to tell the scholars what you found. They will give you the corresponding item they found, and with this, you can craft the Guardian Tripcaster.

This unique weapon works like most tripcasters, you fire two projectiles and a line forms between them. However, instead of a tripwire, the Guardian Tripcaster creates a protective shield.
