Combee has an unusual evolution process in Pokemon GO, as you'll need to catch a specific version of it before you can evolve it into the fierce bee queen Vespiquen.

Most Pokemon have traditional evolution paths, meaning they only need to be fed a specific amount of Candy to evolve in the mobile game. But there are some creatures like Combee that have certain requirements that need to be met before they can evolve.

How to evolve Combee

The only way to evolve a Combee in Pokemon GO is to catch a female Combee and feed it 50 Candy.

You can tell if a Combee is female before you catch it because it will have a red triangle on its lower face. This can save you some time when trying to find one in the wild, as you can simply flee if it's not female.

You can also check the gender of Combee that you've already caught by heading to your Pokemon collection. Tap on the Combee you want to examine and look for the ♀ symbol next to its name.

This gender-specific evolution is the same in the mainline games, so it's not surprising that Niantic carried it across to the mobile version. It's most likely inspired by the queen bee that appears in nature in real life!

How rare are female Combee?

The chances of encountering a female Combee in Pokemon GO are estimated to be around 1 in 8, but I know a few Trainers who have spent ages trying to find one, so the odds won't always be in your favour.

There's no way to improve your chances of finding a female Combee, so you'll just need to encounter as many as you can and if they don't have the female marking, don't bother catching them and look for another one.

Can Combee be Shiny in Pokemon GO?

The good news is that Shiny Combee is available in Pokemon GO! The bad news is that your odds of finding a Shiny female Combee are very low, meaning Shiny Vespiquen is a very rare Pokemon indeed.

Both Combee and Vespiquen have an orange colour scheme in their Shiny variants, rather than the traditional yellow hue.
