The reveal of Pokemon Concierge raised some eyebrows.
We’ve known Pokemon series to be one thing - a linear anime adventure following an unlikely hero and their dedicated companion on a journey to become the best of the best. We’ve seen it with the original show, we’re seeing it with Pokemon Horizons, and we even saw it in its own way in the live-action Detective Pikachu movie - but we’ve never seen anything quite like this.
The stop-motion Pokemon series follows Pokemon Resort worker Haru in her attempts to help soothe and draw Pokemon into total relaxation - all presented with a gorgeous animation style that we’ve never seen before in the franchise.
And it looks like the gamble of a much different series has paid off.
Pokemon Concierge is critically perfect on Rotten Tomatoes
In a fantastic step for the series that too many doubted, critics around the world have contributed to Pokemon Concierge earning the coveted “perfect” rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It’s easy to take this as a sign that the series is perfect, but that’s not quite how Rotten Tomatoes - rather than proving that every critic that has rated Pokemon Concierge gave it a perfect score, it indicates that every critic that has published a review of the series so far has passed the review score threshold that indicates they enjoyed the series.
Even so, this is a pretty great result for the series, especially as even with the most critically beloved projects on the site, there’s usually one or two outliers. It looks like we don’t have anything to worry about when it comes to the relaxing stop-motion romp.
What are critics saying about Pokemon Concierge?
The list of quotes from critics lining the series’ Rotten Tomatoes page is incredibly sweet, as reviewers praise the show’s animation and low stakes.
The Verge’s Charles Pulliam-Moore perhaps puts it best when he says “Pokémon Concierge's gorgeous production design, and its heartwarming stories about the power of relaxation are what make it one of The Pokémon Company's most inspired collaborations.”
Reuben Baron from Paste Magazine adds that “The felt-crafted stop-motion animation is incredible. Pokémon have never before been animated in such an adorable and tactile way.”
It’s lovely to see such a low-stakes gamble pay off for The Pokemon Company, and the love that the short series is getting could lead to some even more off-the-wall projects to come. We can only dream.
