Those pesky Pokemon evolutions are perhaps the prevailing mechanic across the franchise, offering actual progression and excitement in a changing world. But sometimes, it simply doesn't hit.

There are few reasons to keep a Magikarp from evolving into a Gyarados, but equally, the anime means players are much more likely to withhold a Thunder Stone from a Pikachu and keep it from becoming the more powerful Raichu.

Evolution lines can be tough, especially for the moth and butterfly Pokemon, who have to last through chrysalis. However, there are others that players simply can't abide, and they'll often stop evolutions just so they don't have to deal with the Pokemon they hate.

Players share their least favourite Pokemon evolutions

Pokemon fans have taken to Reddit to share their least favourite Pokemon that they've met along their adventures, sometimes losing their favourite beasties to less attractive, grown-up versions of themselves.

"For me it’s Walrein. I hate Walrein,” says Reddit user psychicvision27 as they ask players what they think is the evolution that "ruined" their evolutionary lines. "Spheal is a perfectly adorable boy, and Sealeo is a great and entirely acceptable evolution, which is where it should have stopped. WHY does it have to evolve into a weird clown-walrus thing?"

Others have sounded off with their own disappointments, with another player saying, "I've never felt the disappointment that was everything after Rolycoly. A cute little guy that eventually just turns into this... lump."

"Crabominable hands down, we got this badass boxer crab with a cockeye just to make it look even cooler then it turns into that abomination," adds another. But seemingly, there’s one Pokemon that players hate above the rest, and it’s a pretty shocking answer.

Fans have revealed that Rhyperior may be among the least popular final evolutions of any of the franchise's monsters, with players coming together to rag on the stocky, rocky fella.

"Rydon is so f**king cool, and they made his evolution look like he doesn’t even know what to do with his arms," says one user, while another chimes in saying that they have "too many rounded and polygonal bits."

"I don't hate it, but Rhydon is so much better, especially because its colors aren't ugly," another user offers, practically solidifying that players have found their new bottom-of-the-pile Pokemon. Seems a bit harsh to us, to be honest, but someone's gotta foot the bill.
