There's a lot riding on Gotham Knights, and it's not something that developers at WB Games Montreal could really have avoided. Presenting something set in the universe of Batman with a similar aesthetic to the beloved Arkham series of games would always set the game up for comparison, with developers still making efforts to ensure that the game would develop a legacy of its own.

Fans will be making those comparisons, but little will change the fact that Batman is dead, meaning it falls to his Knights to stand up to the Court of Owls. Except, disappointingly, not in a 4-player co-op mode that's baked into the game itself.

Following the disappointment of a reveal that players couldn't hop into the game with all of their pals as their partners, it looks like WB Games Montreal is looking to remedy the disappointment with an all-new mode.

Gotham Knights Introduces Heroic Assault Standalone Mode

A new mode is being introduced to Gotham Knights, that promises an entire squad of four players can team up in co-op action. This comes after it was confirmed that the game's campaign would only support two players at most.

"Heroic Assault is an upcoming gameplay mode that is separate from the main story campaign," states the game's FAQ. "The standalone mode supports up to four players in online co-op and provides a dedicated arena-like environment with specific objectives to complete and enemies to defeat on each floor (30 floors total)."

It's not exactly what fans have been hoping for, but at least it's something for fans to get involved with with their full squad. The whole point of Gotham Knights is being able to play with a roster of Bat Family members instead of being locked to Batman like the majority of Rocksteady's Arkham games did. It's true we got snippets of playing as Catwoman or Nightwing, but it wasn't the same.

What Is The Gotham Knights Release Date

Though expectations are a little all over the place, at least we don't have much longer to wait until we find out for ourselves how Gotham Knights plays out. The game is finally landing with us on October 21 (that's this Friday) so we can finally zip around Gotham once again.

The jury is currently out on Gotham Knights, and with mass disappointment that it's trapped in a last-gen 30 FPS, the introduction of a proper 4-player co-op should do something to ease the pain. Also, if we're already getting plans for post-release content drops, there are hopes that more could be on the way. With critiques it's lacking villains, we could add a few more rogues in a mythical DLC.

At least Gotham Knights' introduction of a new mode should make the hit of no baked-in 4-player co-op sting a little less. Even then, we bet it still won't be enough for some who are sharpening their pitchforks against a title that's stuck in Rocksteady's shadow. Assemble your own Bat Family on October 21.
