As the biggest entry in the franchise's history, Diablo 4 offers players a lot of ways to puzzle their way through their surroundings. Let's be honest, the most fun way through is to crush, kill, and destroy.
Killing foes and completing quests seem to be the best ways to accrue loot, with players being more than willing to test this by crushing anything in their path - regardless of their class. Now, there are some with a bold theory convincing players to follow the rats. It's a kind of reverse Pied Piper situation, but let us explain.
Diablo 4 players think that rats are showing them loot
FOLLOW THE RATS
by u/zerger45 in diablo4
A strange theory has appeared on the Diablo 4 subreddit, claiming that the dungeon crawler's scurrying vermin will lead players to the best loot that the title offers. Considering Diablo 4 rats were once considered a mere addition to the immersion of the locales that feature them, it's an interesting idea.
"Okay this is going to sound really bizarre, but you need to follow the rats for good loot," suggests u/zerger45. "Don't follow the predetermined path in any dungeon, instead, just follow the rats." This might sound like the ramblings of a madman, but there could be some merit to it.
"The rats smell the cheese," continues the post, "I'm telling you it's real and I feel like I'm crazy but I found multiple legendaries doing this within a span of maybe 10 minutes."
Diablo 4's loot distribution is supposed to be purely by chance, but what if it isn't? Even if it's a bold claim that will take you off the beaten path and could lead to you getting lost in Sanctuary, it seems that fans are following orders nicely...like a legion of loyal rats.
Fans are in two minds about the Diablo rats theory
"Your posts sounds exactly like what one of the looney blue quest-giving NPCs would say," says one commenter who is unconvinced by the idea. Others reckon there's some truth to the statement.
"Ok, I know most of us are joking, but following the animals has lead me to plant mats," says another user. "Following the rats doesn't sound that ridiculous in that context." Someone else shared the infamous Charlie wall meme from It's Always Sunny.
A third added, "I've seriously been grinding for this ring for two days of nightmare runs, ring-focused loot boxes, helltide chests, and I read that rats post and followed some rats and this dropped on about the 15th mob."
Be warned, it could be the opposite with snakes. If rats lead you to rare loot, snakes seem to lead you into a trap. "I see a snake and follow the snake," said one unlucky player. "The snake was evil it was a trap. I ran into a one way. I am sorry to have doubted the might rats. It will not happen again."
It's interesting to consider - but its effectiveness is only decided by you. Get out there and scurry across the ground for the truth.
