The Typhlosion Tera Raid is back in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet from Friday, 21 April 2023, and players who missed the raid's first round will need to be prepared with the best counters to use, as this is their last chance to beat this powerful 7-star boss.

So, let's get into the best Typhlosion Tera Raid counters you'll need to defeat the 'mon in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet

As confirmed on the official Pokemon community post, this Typhlosion will appear in black crystal Tera Raid battles found across the Paldea map.

Although normally a Fire-type, the Typhlosion in this Tera Raid will have a Ghost Tera-type. This means that not only will your chosen Pokemon need to be strong enough to combat a level 100 boss with the Mightiest Mark, but also be able to withstand a move set comprising of both types.

With a moveset including attacks like Eruption, Shadow Ball, Play Rough, Earthquake, and Sunny Day, Typhlosion is quite the versatile attacker you'll need to prepare for.

Altogether, the best typing counters to go for in order to defeat the 7-star Typhlosion would be variations of Ghost and Dark types - as each boasts varied resistances to Typhlosion's Ghost moves, along with most other types in its potential move pool.

Keep reading for a breakdown of which Pokemon we'd recommend taking into battle:

Houndoom

This is another ideal pairing of dual types, as the Dark and Fire-type Houndoom is not only immune to Typhlosion’s Fire moves due to its Flash Fire ability, but is also resistant to Ghost-type attacks.

The best Houndoom Typhlosion Tera Raid build is as follows:

  • Ability: Flash Fire
  • Nature: Modest
  • Tera Type: Dark
  • Hold Item: Shell Bell
  • EVs: 252 Sp. Atk, 252 HP, 4 Sp. Def
  • Moveset: Dark Pulse, Nasty Plot, Snarl, Taunt

By spreading EVs mostly across HP and SP. Atk, this Tera Raid build is meant to utilise Houndoom's resistance by also making it more of a tank.

Then, after using Nasty Plot to bolster its Sp. Atk further, you can soon Terastallize Houndoom to make for massively super-effective damage using Dark Pulse.

Honchkrow

If you want a natural tank as the best Typhlosion Tera Raid counter in Scarlet and Violet, Honchkrow is the way to go. With its dual Dark and Flying typing, the Murkrow evolution has covered resistance against Typhlosion's potential Ghost and Fighting-type attacks.

The best Honchkrow Typhlosion Tera Raid build is as follows:

  • Ability: Super Luck
  • Nature: Careful
  • Tera Type: Dark
  • Hold Item: Shell Bell
  • EVs: 252 Sp. Def, 252 HP, 4 Atk
  • Moveset: Foul Play, Rain Dance, Screech, Swagger

With its Careful nature and EV spread, this Honchkrow build is great at taking hits whilst halving the damage of Typhlosion's Fire-type attacks with Rain Dance - whilst setting up a hard-hitting Foul Play combo.

Foul Play does more damage the higher the target's Attack stat. So, by raising Typhosion's Attack with Swagger, a stat which is redundant to it as a Special Attacker. By also using Screech to lower Typhlosion's Defense, your Foul Play can inflict even more damage along with its STAB (Same-Type Attack Bonus).

Although there’s currently only one available, Hisuian Zoroark is the most effective choice amongst Typhlosion Tera Raid counters. After all, its dual Normal and Ghost typing makes it immune to any Ghost-type move Typhlosion’s using.

The best Hisuian Zoroark Typhlosion Tera Raid build is as follows:

  • Ability: Illusion
  • Nature: Modest
  • Tera Type: Ghost
  • Hold Item: Shell Bell
  • EVs: 252 Sp. Atk, 252 HP, 4 Sp. Def
  • Moveset: Fake Tears, Nasty Plot, Rain Dance, Shadow Ball

This build benefits on multiple fronts, debuffing Typhlosion’s Fire-type moves with Rain Dance, lowering its Sp. Def with Fake Tears, and buffing its own Sp. Atk Nasty plot before hitting hard with Shadow Ball.

A Ghost Tera Type will boost its Shadow Ball damage further. However, you can also go with a Normal Tera type if you want to maintain immunity against Typhlosion’s Ghost-type attacks.
