If you haven't played Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout yet, seriously, where have you been? For those of us who used to love watching Takeshi's Castle on Challenge and listening to Craig Charles narrate as a bunch of bumbling contestants tumbled into murky water, Fall Guys is basically that, but using colourful avatars and from the comfort of your own home.
Mediatonic's game only launched on August 4, but safe to say, it's already "knocking out" the competition. Just days after the game burst onto our screens, Twitch Rivals has confirmed it's going to be holding its first Fall Guys event soon. With Fall Guys' addictive gameplay and competative edge, it's easy to see how it could branch out into the world of esports.
Could Fall Guys become an esport?
Posting on Twitter, the official Twitch esports account confirmed a Twitch Rivals/Fall Guys union is on the way. The clip included streamer Saqib "Lirik" Zahid saying he'd love to give it a go when one fan suggested the idea.
Even though Fall Guys was only officially released recently, players with a key were given early access from July 24. This means the game has picked up some serious traction, as popular streamers have been practicing (and showing off) their skills for a few weeks.
Elsewhere, even rapper Soulja Boy has been getting in on the action and trying his hand at Fall Guys.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout is already poised to become a gaming obsession and was downloaded a whopping 1.5 million times in the first 24 hours.
Given that Fall Guys launched with 500,000 viewers on Twitch, it didn't take a gaming genius to figure out this one was going to be massive.
Admittedly, the popularity of Fall Guys has led to some server issues with players being unable to join or dropping out halfway through a match. Still, it seems Mediatonic is doing everything it can to keep afloat amidst this sea of success.
If you head over to the official Fall Guys Twitter, there's a bizarre exchange where CD Projekt Red has joked about doing a collaboration with Mediatonic for a Fall Guys and Witcher crossover.
For the time being though, it looks like we'll have to watch what happens to Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout and whether it lives up to its esports potential.
