Irish content creator Rebecca "Minx" has been banned from Twitch for seven days after using a "derogatory slur" during a livestream.

Twitch has been hammering down hard on content creators in recent times for various reasons, ranging from the very serious to the downright bizarre. Whether it be breaking DMCA rules or, in one instance, a streamer who shaved their genitals live on stream, Twitch has been dealing out bans against streamers left, right, and centre.

Now, streamer Minx has faced the Amazon-owned platform's wrath (for a limited time anyway) after being banned from Twitch for the second time. According to Minx, the ban was due to her using a controversial "derogatory slur."

What Derogatory Term Did Minx Use?

Announcing her ban on February 8 via Twitter, Minx claimed Twitch had banned her from the platform for using a "derogatory slur," but she initially wasn't sure what the word specifically was. However, discussing the events in a YouTube video she posted shortly after the ban, Minx stated that the only derogatory word she could have used was "cracker."

Anyone familiar with the whole "cracker" Twitch drama will probably be thinking "oh no, not another one." After all, this certainly isn't the first time a streamer has landed in hot water for using the term. Back in December 2021, Hasan "HasanAbi" Piker was banned from Twitch for using the term as it was seen as "anti-white racism."

The term "cracker" as a slur has a disputed origin but some claim its origins lie in 18th century America, when poor white Americans, mainly from Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia, were referred to as "whip-crackers" for the work they did on livestock farms.

Hasan's ban, along with the criticism of other streamers not receiving bans for using the term, sparked a heated dispute online as some fans debated whether it could be considered a derogatory term at all. Whereas others argued that Twitch should be fair and ban streamers for using all derogatory terms no matter what they are.

How Long Is Minx Banned For?

In the YouTube video, Minx explained that the ban is only for seven days. It might not seem as devastating as a permanent ban, but for Minx it was clearly crushing given how, as she claimed, Twitch is her "main source of income." However, the 24-year-old held her hands up and stated: "It's my own fault, I saw other streamers get away and I thought I can say it too [...] I was dumb enough to think I'd get away with that."

So, it's definitely not the last we've heard of Minx as she hopefully will be back up on stream in just a week. Although, for Minx the end of her ban can't come soon enough explaining that she shared her home with three other streamers. She joked: "If I go on their streams I could get them banned. One for all. All for one."
