"Always two there are, no more, no less." That's the rule of the Sith, and when it comes to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, it sounds like a familiar foe from the Dark Side of the Force could be making his long-awaited return to the galaxy far, far away. Can you hear the clanking of Darth Maul's robotic spider legs?

When it comes to iconic Star Wars villains, we tend to think of Darth Vader's heavy breathing or Emperor Palpatine's melty face, but let's spare a moment for the underrated Darth Maul. Although his debut was short but sweet in The Phantom Menace, fans know being sliced in half by a lightsaber was only the start of his story.

In 2019, Respawn Entertainment sliced its way to the top of the charts with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The idea of combining Star Wars with a Souls-like was a brilliant brainwave that saw Cal Kestis redeem the tattered reputation of lacklustre games from the galaxy far, far away - we're looking at you Kinect Star Wars.

Fallen Order filled that neat gap between George Lucas' prequel trilogy and 1977's A New Hope, with Cal's story taking place in the immediate aftermath of Order 66, as the few surviving Jedi go on the run from the Empire. Jedi: Survivor picks up five years later, which still puts it slap bang in the middle of this untapped period of Star Wars lore where we've already been told to expect some major cameos

Speaking on the Xbox Era Podcast, insider Nick Baker claims that he's heard rumours Darth Maul will be crawling back into our lives. Baker reiterates that he heard this about a year ago but that it still stands. Given Maul's convoluted history in Star WarsSurvivor's setting definitely leaves room for it. It could also clear up some of those plot threads left dangling by his cameo in Solo: A Star Wars Story

Those up on their Star Wars timeline (it's a full-time job), will know that after being cut in half on Naboo, Darth Maul returned to mainline canon as a robotic spider. As well as having a major role in The Clone Wars animated series, he was later bested for a second time, and seemingly killed off for good by Obi-Wan Kenobi in Rebels. Baker and co. say they don't watch Star Wars because it's "for kids", so let's not take his insight too literally.

There were wild rumours that Maul was supposed to be the big bad of Deborah Chow's Obi-Wan Kenobi series before he was replaced by Darth Vader, but it's something the showrunner has since denied. With continued reports Survivor will crossover with Obi-Wan, the idea of bringing back Old Ben's nemesis to take on Cal is a tempting idea. Remembering that Cal hasn't appeared in any other corners of expanded canon, who's to say he won't meet a sticky end at the hands of Maul in Survivor?
