Nintendo is giving you a free coffee-themed treat to celebrate Detective Pikachu Returns
Detective Pikachu Returns has been with us for a little while now, and though it hasn't quite made the splash that Nintendo was hoping for, they're still more than happy to remind us of the cheeky inquisitor with a penchant for good coffee.
Though it might be his movie debut that most people turn to when it comes to reminders of his antics, Detective Pikachu is still a strong series that travels quite a way from the atmosphere of its source material to create an entirely new experience - and though many haven't engaged specifically with the gameplay itself, it's definitely something to be celebrated that Nintendo isn't sticking to the same-old same-old formula.
Especially as it rewards its fans so well.

A new cup cozy featuring a pattern design of Detective Pikachu, newspapers and coffee cups has appeared on the MyNintendo store for fans to claim and take with them on their coffee runs, and it joins the leagues of other incredibly sweet items on the store like Pokemon notebooks, Mario pin sets and even N64 Controller-themed paperclips.
Unfortunately this cozy appears to be exclusive to the US for now, but there's still a chance it can reach our shores and join the poster packs and pin sets available to us here.
What's with Detective Pikachu's coffee addiction?
Click to enlargeThe cup cozy is an incredibly charming and fitting reward for your MyNintendo points, but only because Pikachu himself is hooked on coffee. But why exactly is that?
Speaking with ComicBook.com, Detective Pikachu Returns' director suggested that the addiction to coffee isn't about the coffee itself - but more about a detective character having his own hyper fixations.
"There's probably certain items that are associated with the character of a detective," he says. "For this case it just made a lot of sense for Pikachu to just have that old man characteristic of drinking some coffee and just really loving coffee."
It doesn't matter if he needs his caffeine, because as an office full of journalists, we can't really do much but relate to the little guy and his interest in the bean water. That probably says a lot about us, but we're not going to read into it.
