It's pretty impressive that some nine years after Grand Theft Auto Online raced into our lives, Rockstar Games is still finding ways to keep it fresh. Although most eyes are now on the impending release of GTA 6, that hasn't stopped the developer milking its online cash cow for all it's worth.

The 2022 GTA Online update has been praised across the board, and while it's not quite up there 2019's Diamond Casino & Resort or 2020's Cayo Perico HeistCriminal Enterprises has shown there's still plenty of gas left in the tank. Well, that's if you can play it. The latest overhaul has been branded "terrifying" by some gamers, who are refusing to play.

Why Is The New GTA Online Mission Being Called Terrifying?

Warning: mild GTA Online spoilers ahead. The final mission of Criminal Enterprises' campaign is more spine-chilling than anyone expected. It looks like a scene from Westworld, as you head into the creepy bunker from the beloved Doomsday Heist. In the years since it was abandoned, it has remained stacked with sleeping Juggernaut robots. They have the likeness of humans - albeit with a terrifying twist.

Armed with a flashlight, you have to explore while listening to these murderous machines breathing all around you. You can see where this is heading, and once the power is turned back on, they come to life and chase you. Yikes. Over on Reddit, players are sharing their horror stories about trying to complete Criminal Enterprises

One wrote, "Not gonna lie, got a lil jumpscare. I was in first person walking in the dark. Turned the corner and he was right in my face then made that noise at the same time." Another recounted, "I went around with just the light from the flare using the minimap as a guide and I sat bolt upright when I ran straight into a dormant juggernaught." A third concluded, "It was downright terrifying exploring the silo once more, only this time being abandoned for half a decade. Even with 3 other people in there with me, we were all feeling pretty eerie, especially since we decided to split up when looking for the fuses."

What's Next For GTA Online?

Terrifying updates aside, there are calls for Rockstar to deliver more of this kind of update in the future. Interestingly, all those rumours of a GTA IV expansion or the arrival of GTA V's Michael turned out to be a bust. That doesn't mean they won't still land in-game though. More likely, we'll start to get more teases of GTA 6 in Online

Despite the critical panning of the GTA Trilogy, Rockstar is putting all its efforts into the franchise right now. This has come at the cost of Red Dead Online, which was recently confirmed to stop major updates. There's no official word on when GTA 6 will release, but when it does, it will be interesting to see how Online evolves or whether we're going down the Call of Duty route and introducing a whole new game like Warzone 2. In the meantime, Rockstar should probably leave the jump scares to Five Nights at Freddy's
