LEGO getting involved in video game sets has been the worst thing to happen to the interior design of nerd homes everywhere.

The Mario range has been especially lucrative for the Danish toy company, with the question mark block set based on Super Mario 64 selling like hotcakes. The adventuring sets have allowed players to build their own real-life Mario levels, so it's safe to say that the collaboration has done pretty well.

Fans have wondered what could be next from a Nintendo collaboration with LEGO - and although we now know the answer, it's one that some fans didn't want.

LEGO reveals new Donkey Kong collaboration

LEGO has finally unveiled its newest set in the Super Mario collection we've been enjoying for a while, and it has every chance to be yet another financial banger. Posting to its Twitter account, LEGO revealed a short video and confirmed a dedicated set to Donkey Kong.

The announcement cames with a brief look at a series of franchise characters. Leading the charge is )of course) DK himself, but the video also shows us snippets of the designs of Diddy, Dixie, Cranky, and Funky. Thank goodness Funky Kong is getting the love he deserves.

We don't know exactly what the set itself will look like - or how much it will cost - but given that the music playing in the background of the video is from Donkey Kong Country, we imagine it'll be based on the side-scrolling masterpiece from Rare.

Why are fans annoyed at the Donkey Kong set?

Though the prospect of a Donkey Kong-themed LEGO set is incredibly cool to some, it's disappointing to others - as they expected a different property to appear entirely.

After LEGO stopped taking requests for sets based on The Legend of Zelda, leaks way back in January claimed a Great Deku Tree set was on the horizon. With every passing day without its official announcement, fans grow more worried about the Zelda set simply doesn't.

Is the Donkey Kong LEGO set the final nail in the coffin for a prospective visit to Hyrule? At least for now, this seems like the case. This doesn't definitely mean that Zelda won't appear in bricky form, but it's certainly another roadblock for fans. But please, don't take it out on the monkey. It's not his fault.
