While it might seem like we’ve only just got to grips with God of War’s Norse mythology era, Sony Santa Monica Studio is already closing the book on this chapter. 2022’s God of War Ragnarok is set to be a catastrophic affair, however, it might not be the end of the franchise as we know it.

Since 2005, SSM’s God of War series has (literally) gone from strength to strength. The original trilogy rounded off with Kratos finally besting Zeus in 2010, meaning it was another eight years until the rebooted God of War took us to the other side of the world and broke records across the board.

Even if we already know there won’t be a trilogy of Norse games, the developer is already working on a mysterious new game.

What Is Sony Santa Monica Working On?

A new job listing seems to confirm SSM is already working on its next game. The dev is hiring for a Full-Time Art Director who needs to be “an industry veteran and craft expert.” It might’ve been possible that the team is just expanding for future projects, but the ad confirms it’s for “a new unannounced title.”

Even though this is far from confirmation God of War 3 (well, technically God of War 6) is on the way, let’s look at the facts. Aside from the main GoW games and its spinoffs, Sony Santa Monica’s internal team has only worked on Kinetica in 2001. The futuristic racing game isn’t exactly a household name, so it would seem weird to return to this.

Looking at the bigger picture, it’s entirely plausible that SSM is working on a new IP. Remembering Naughty Dog has hit it big with legacy franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted, and The Last of Us, imagine the potential of Sony Santa Monica crafting another major franchise. Then again, a Ragnarok sequel/God of War reboot of a reboot would be equally well-received.

Will Kratos Die In God Of War Ragnarok?

Things will likely become clearer when God of War Ragnarok releases later this year. The name “Ragnarok” implies the end of days, which sounds like the perfect opportunity to kill off Kratos. Then again, he’s survived a brush with death before. We could also be left with a post-credit scene similar to God of War III that teases his survival. Whatever Sony Santa Monica is working on, the fact we’re only just hiring an Art Director suggests we’re a long way off a reveal.

Some have suggested that Kratos will best the Norse gods and take over from Tyr as the Norse God of War. Elsewhere, there are hopes that the fan-favourite Atreus will take over from daddy dearest and lead the franchise into yet another mythology. From Ancient Egypt to the Creation Mythy of Chinese mythology, there are any number of places we can go. Whatever Sony Santa Monica is working on, expect it to be suitably epic.
