Fimbulwinter might be thawing, as the latest rumours claim Sony Santa Monica is working on a new God of War game. 18 years after Kratos first swung his Blades of Chaos, the God of War name is still one of Sony's biggest PlayStation exclusives.

Following a lengthy hiatus, God of War came back in style with 2018's reboot. Proving that sometimes bigger is better, 2022's God of War Ragnarok continued the story. We were told there wouldn't be a trilogy of Norse games, meaning many thought Ragnarok would be the end of the road...for now.

New God of War game apparently on the way

God of War's future remains unclear, but according to insider @ViewerAnon, Sony Santa Monica is working on something new. Responding to an IGN article about half-sequels, the OP claims SSM is looking to expand Kratos' legacy with something similar.

Although ViewerAnon doesn't reveal what the developer is cooking up, the suggestion is that we're getting something smaller than a mainline God of War game. We can't help but think of Cyberpunk 2077's massive Phantom Liberty expansion or Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The news was shared on ResetEra, where fans had their own theories. One wrote, "Would bet money on a lost legacy scale project," referring to Naughty Dog's Uncharted title. Not everyone was a fan, as another added, "Oh man I hope the term “half sequels” doesn’t take off, sounds like a disservice to what’s a full game."

A third said, "Please be a smaller scale project. I really liked Ragnarok but it was a little too long (though that was mostly one of the Atreus segments being far too long)." The idea of a Miles Morales-inspired Atreus game seems the most likely, although there are plenty of sceptics.

What's next for Kratos and Atreus?

Beyond hopes of half-games or DLCs, we're sure God of War will get a full-blown return in the future. Knowing we're leaving Midgard behind, there are wild theories about where we could head next. As well as concept trailers for an Egyptian jaunt, others have been calling for a trip to Chinese mythology.

Despite New Game Plus giving us something to sink our teeth into, those whispers of a Ragnarok DLC have (so far) turned into nothing. As early as February 2022, it looked like SSM was hiring for a new title, and with Atreus actor Sunny Suljic teasing the character's future, things are coming together nicely.
