The spooky season might seem like it's an age away in Fortnite, but that hasn't stopped those horror hounds at Epic Games already rolling out the coffin for this year's Fortnitemares. This spooktacular has been a staple of Fortnite since 2017, with the aptly named Fortnitemare's being a must-play event. So, what's on the way in 2021?

As Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 7 winds to a close, everyone is getting ready for Season 8, and there are rumours of an open-world RPG. However, with a new season due to start on September 13, it means Season 8 will definitely cover this year's Halloween event. Now, there's the rumoured return of a fan-favourite mode.

What's coming to Fortnite for Halloween 2021?

According to noted leaker HYPEX, Horde Rush will be back in Fortnite for this year's spooky season. For those who don't know, Horde Rush was first introduced as a Limited Time Mode in 2019. The aim of the game is to survive swarms of the undead and reach a final boss. In 2021, it sounds like things are going to be a little different.

HYPEX claims there will be new gameplay features and even stronger zombies to battle with. Notably, the idea that some weapons can turn you invisible is a major coup. There will be different varieties of undead (taking a leaf out of Call of Duty Zombies' book). For example, red enemies will explode when you eliminate them, or they're near another player. Our favourite is white enemies, which will chill your feet and make trying to dash away uphill impossible.

Thankfully, you'll be able to counteract a harder Horde Rush with auto-heal and revives between waves. Elsewhere, Obelisk Chests will give you some much-needed weapons to beef up your arsenal. With a final boss, you're advised to make sure you're fully equipped before taking them on.

When will the Fortnite Halloween event kick-off in 2021?

As with any Fortnite event, there are sure to be a new run of limited edition skins that will have us parting with our hard-earned V-bucks. Last year saw the return of the villainous Midas with the Midas' Revenge challenges, so rest assured Horde Rush isn't the only thing on the horizon.

In 2020, Fortnitemares kicked off on October 21 and ran through to November 3. We're still a few months off, but expect this year's Halloween showcase to launch around the similar time. Two years after Horde Rush clawed its way into our lives, it's about time we dusted off the beloved LTM for a new era of Fortnite
