You might think that the Mushroom Kingdom is a jolly place, but when you think about it, it's actually a nightmarish realm that's constantly being invaded by a spiky turtle. There's also the fact Yoshi is an adorable dinosaur enjoying his life before he's forced into a life of being Mario's horse.

There are plenty of dark Mario theories out there, like Peach being Boswer Jr.'s mother, Donkey Kong killing Mario's dad, and cannibal Toad being some of the best. Now, Chris Pratt has waded into one of the darkest Mario theories.

Chris Pratt discusses 'dead Mario' theory

Recently, a grim Mario theory started doing the rounds - suggesting that the 1-Up mushrooms that give you an extra life are actually grown from dead Marios.

The Mario games aren't the hardest in the world, but chances are, your portly plumber has kicked the bucket a few times over the years. The theory is definitely plausible, and it puts a The Last of Us-inspired spin on all those Marios we've buried.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Pratt and Charlie Day were promoting their upcoming roles in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. When asked about the dead Mario theory, Pratt responded saying, "That makes me want to eat mushrooms even less. That's really amazing that you found that."

Day put his own twist on the theory and added, "That makes me wonder if they're having burials for these characters because he's in the Earth with that mushroom growing out of his back. That's dark, man. Don't show that to my kid."

The Mario Cinematic Universe is coming

We doubt we'll see the dead Mario theory play out in Illumination's The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but you never know. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had the grim reveal that Ego had a grave of his children.

The idea could be explored in a potential sequel, as let's be honest, more Mario movies are on the way. As well as whispers of Seth Rogen getting his own Donkey Kong spin-off, Day has already hyped Luigi's Mansion movie

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has hinted at an expanded universe, while a sneaky Easter egg teased a Smash Bros.-style crossover. We're a long way off from seeing Mario pop up in a Sonic movie, but who knows what the future holds?
