The 1999 cult-classic Fight Club got an unexpected censorship makeover in China and the results are hilarious. So much so, that one streamer was left wheezing as he tried to explain what happens in the film's new ending.
On January 25, fans of the classic 90's film Fight Club were shocked to discover that the film's ending, one of the most iconic conclusions in film history, had been completely removed in China as part of the country's censorship laws. Instead, it was replaced with an ending which had fans crying with laughter.
One such fan was streamer, Ryan "Northernlion" Letourneau who struggled to get his words out to try and explain the new ending to his viewers from laughing so much.
What Happens In The Original Ending Of Fight Club?
*Spoiler Alert*
For those who are unfamiliar with Fight Club, the David Fincher classic sees wimpy Edward Norton (The Narrator) being coerced into joining an elite underground fighting group by enigmatic character Tyler Durden (played by Brad Pitt), who is later revealed to be The Narrator's imaginary alter-ego. In the end, The Narrator kills Tyler. Then, in a scene which has become a firm favourite for many film buffs, he joins his partner Maria (played by Helena Bonham Carter) as they watch the world around them combust and collapse. Oh, and Meat Loaf also has a starring role.
This explosive scene represented the film's anarchist and anti-capitalist message. Something which clearly didn't sit too well with China, as more than 20 years after the film's release, Chinese film officials decided to censor the end of the film in a much to give it a much more authoritative conclusion. And by censor, I mean they cut it out entirely.
How Did Northernlion React To The Chinese Ending Of Fight Club?
In his review of the new Chinese ending of Fight Club, Northernlion claimed that it had "to be the funniest way to censor a movie of all time." So, what exactly happens in China's censored version of the film?
Well, Northernlion explained that just before the buildings explode, the screen fades to black. He claimed there was a title card which read: "Through the clue provided by Tyler, the police rapidly figured out the whole plan and arrested all criminals, successfully preventing the bomb from exploding," the caption reads. "After the trial, Tyler was sent to [a] lunatic asylum receiving psychological treatment. He was discharged from the hospital in 2012."
Films aren't the only forms of media which are getting a censorship makeover in China at the minute. Gaming has also been hit hard by the new laws. Not only were under-18s banned from playing games for more than 3 hours a week, but under-16s were banned from streaming. Then, in one distressing move, the country tried to crackdown on games featuring 'gay love.'
