Rogue Legacy 2 skill tree is less of a skill tree, and more of a skill castle. Rogue Legacy 2 is all about repeatedly adventuring through the Kingdom as multiple generations of the same family, and upgrading your castle between each run. Upgrades cost gold, which you accrue from defeating enemies, and lose when you re-enter the Kingdom. Here is everything you need to know to best upgrade your Rogue Legacy 2 skill tree.

At the start of every run, you will choose your new character. Then you will be brought to the skill tree screen. It starts as a bare plot of land, and you have a handful of options to choose from. Early options are basic things, more health, more mana, and your first few new character classes. Each skill you invest in adds a section of the castle, which expands over time as you gain more skills and classes. It’s a really fun and interesting way to represent your progress through the game, as your castle gets bigger, you get stronger.

The thing to remember about skills is that every skill you invest in makes all other skills more expensive. It is a bit like Elden Ring or any Souls game, where your levels get more expensive as you go. This means intelligent investing is a good idea, you can absolutely brute-force it and buy every upgrade in the game, but it is expensive. Your best strategy is to think about the upgrades you have available and focus on the ones that are most meaningful to you. Maybe look into the future options and builds that most appeal to you and focus on getting to them.

  • Upgrades and new classes on the skill tree are one way to alter your gameplay experience in the game, another way is to make use of Rogue Legacy 2 Relics.

Your first few options on the skill tree will be very limited, and you can invest in every direction you want to, but later upgrades will require previous upgrades to get to. That said, you can and should grab the first few upgrades as many of them are important. Get the gold increases at the start, as well as the Ranger class. Then you can get the Blacksmith and Enchantress, they are merchants who appear on the dock and are very important for future upgrades.

From here, you have a few options. Head upwards through the tree to unlock a few more classes and get more health upgrades. Continue straight up, and you will find more classes to unlock just to the left and right of the centre. The left side of the skill tree is predominantly strength and melee focused, while the right side has a lot of intelligence upgrades for mages and Int-based characters.

  • Upgrades are all well and good, provided you have the right classes to use them. To learn more about them, check out our Rogue Legacy 2 Classes guide.

There will always be random elements to your playthrough of Rogue Legacy 2, but there are still plenty of things you can do to focus your play into stronger builds. You might want to make a choice upfront on whether you want to go into melee or magic builds. Most characters can effectively do a bit of both, so this is not a crucial decision, but the most powerful characters tend to focus on one or the other.

On the melee side, you will want to go straight up the skill tree and to the left. Your focus should be on health and strength upgrades. Near the top of the tree, you will unlock the Boxer and the Ronin, two of the absolute best melee fighters in the game.

For the magically inclined, you want to go directly right from the bottom of the skill tree, then up at the end. Along the way, you will be able to grab lots of mana upgrades and all of the intelligence buffs you need to really get the most out of your spells. Right at the top you will find the Astromancer, an incredibly strong magical class that casts out massive black hole spells.

That is what you need to know to make your way through the Rogue Legacy 2 Skill Tree. For more on the game, why not check out our Rogue Legacy 2 Biomes guide.
