With a title such as MW2 - the same name as the 2009 fan-favourite entry - some hefty expectations are being held. Many want to recapture the spirit of the original, while others are just happy to revisit some old maps from the franchise’s past that they’ve grown up with.

If you’re a Call of Duty veteran, you’ll have heard of the map Rust. Even those who aren’t well-versed in the series are most likely aware of its existence. As such, it’s being speculated that Rust could be returning to Modern Warfare 2 with a bang. But there is truth to those rumours, let’s dig in and find out.

Modern Warfare 2 has launched with 16 brand-new maps, but that hasn’t stopped the community from begging for more to be added in the future. The consensus seems to be that fans want to see old favourites returned with a new lick of pain, and Rust is among the conversation.

While it’s not available on its own at launch, players can actually dive into Rust in some capacity. As spotted by Twitter user ModernWarzone, the new Ground War map Al Mazrah actually has Rust built into it. This map will also be part of the upcoming Warzone 2.0 map, meaning Rust is back with a vengeance.

There are currently no confirmed plans for a standalone version of Rust to be added to MW2, but that’s not to say it won’t change. It’s said classic maps will be added to the game in the future, and with Rust also being a part of the 2019 version of Modern Warfare, we wouldn’t put it past Infinity Ward to add this fan-favourite once again.
