The library of multiplayer games available on PlayStation's ecosystem in 2024 can feel almost endless. I've often found myself scrolling through what's on offer, only to come away feeling incredibly overwhelmed - in a good way - at the sheer choice.

So if you're looking to skip past spending an hour scrolling through what's on offer to find some great multiplayer, couch co-op, or split-screen titles to dive into on PS5 for game night with your besties, we've got you covered.

How I chose these best co-op games

While making the list below, I've tried to ensure it suits the needs of every type of gamer. This list could've just been all the best multiplayer shooters around right now, but if you enjoy a fighting game then the list will prove redundant.

I've also made sure some games in here can be played with younger gamers - it may even be their first game, so you don't want to put them off!

  • Release date: 2022
  • Key features:
    • Fun, chaotic gameplay
    • Interesting characters and abilities
    • Teamwork is important

Overwatch 2 may have been a disappointment to fans of the series when it was released, but it was still more Overwatch - one of the most popular shooting games around. All of the characters you can use are unique in their own way, the gameplay is fast-paced and exciting, and to top it off the game is free to play.

12 - Tekken 7

Tekken 7 details & key features

  • Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 PlayStation 5
  • Release date: 2016
  • Key features:
    • Iconic fighting series
    • Unique combo inputs
    • Vast overarching story

There aren't many game franchises more synonymous with multiplayer fun on a PlayStation console than Tekken. From the very first game to Tekken 3 being among the best-selling PS1 titles that the console ever saw, its popularity has continued through to the current Tekken 7 (and the upcoming Tekken 8).

The Tekken franchise has been riding high in recent years, and in the wake of Street Fighter 5 underperforming, we saw Tekken 7 rise to the top and become hugely popular. That momentum is carrying the franchise into the highly anticipated Tekken 8, so if there was ever a time to get back into Tekken, or try it for the first time, that time would be now.

11 - Sackboy: A Big Adventure

    • Adorable platformer
    • Iconic PlayStation mascot
    • PS5 launch title

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a great little PS5 multiplayer game that's available to play via local co-op with up to four players. Join lovable Sackboy's grand quest to save the inhabitants of Craftworld and traverse through this charming 3D platform puzzler with friends and family.

As a PS5 staple, the game has full haptic feature support meaning you'll be able to feel the knitted puzzles in the crafted world around you as you battle against the mean-spirited Vex and his Topsy Turvey device.

10 - Diablo 4

  • Release date: 2023
  • Key features:
    • Complete dungeon crawling experience
    • Frantic multiplayer action
    • Plenty of fresh updates including Season 2

Season 2 is currently live in Diablo 4, and more content is arriving soon in the game's first major expansion.

In this game, you will crawl dungeons, search for loot, and hopefully become increasingly powerful as you take on Sanctuary's many, many villains and chew through its story. It can be played through entirely alone, or with up to four buddies, causing utter chaos on the screen.

9 - Mortal Kombat 1

  • Release date: 2023
  • Key features:
    • Latest in the iconic franchise
    • Reboots the series
    • Rewarding (and gory) fatalities

A new timeline for a new generation, Mortal Kombat 1 continues in the tradition of being able to take on your friends in the most brutal of battlers with the most fearsome fatalities.

Much like Tekken, you'll be relying on memorising pivotal combinations to whittle down your opponent's health until they are begging to be put out of their misery.

8 - Warzone 2.0, DMZ

    • Intense battle royale gameplay
    • Plenty of scope for new modes and updates

Battle royale games are all the rage and have been for several years now, so it stands to reason that big names like Call of Duty would jump on this particularly profitable bandwagon. Warzone has been around for a while, and now we have Warzone 2.0 and the DMZ mode.

Warzone 2.0 brings the gameplay and quality of Call of Duty into the battle royale space and even does so with no cost for entry. The game is free to play, ensuring everyone can play with their friends.

7 - EA FC 24

    • Variety of different couch co-op game modes

EA FC 24, after its recent rebrand from FIFA, is arguably one of the best multiplayer games around. The series always boasts a variety of different modes to enjoy with friends, including Ultimate Team, Kick-Off modes, Volta - and even Career Mode.

So regardless of whether you want to play against others, or with your pals, EA FC 24 will have something for fans to enjoy.

6 - Fortnite

Fortnite details & key features

  • Platforms: PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Android, iOS
  • Release date: 2017
  • Key features:
    • Battle royale gameplay
    • Great crossovers and events
    • Unique crafting and building mechanic

This may seem a bit obvious - and if you're an older reader, you might be rolling your eyes here - but stick with us. Despite its reputation as being a glorified storefront dedicated to swallowing all of the pocket money of 12-year-olds around the world, Fortnite is genuinely a very fun multiplayer game on PS5.

Dig a little deeper, and you will find a light and enjoyable battle royale game that has come a long way since it began. Fortnite has many new features, with more being added regularly to shake up map traversal, from dirt bikes to climbing and vaulting.

Couple that with the bright, fantastic graphics and visual styling showcased on the PS5 (alongside it being free-to-play), and you have a near-perfect game for goofing off with friends in multiplayer.

5 - Untitled Goose Game

Untitled Goose Game details & key features

  • Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Mac
  • Release date: 2019
  • Key features:
    • A game fully committed to letting you be a menace
    • Dedicated honk button
    • Fun for all ages

I first played this game with my friend's 10-year-old son and it was a blast. We sat side-by-side honking all over the place and ruining the days of unsuspecting villagers. Few experiences are just pure fun, and this game can be enjoyed by everyone whether you're in the same room or not.

On top of all that, the puzzles are inspired, causing people of all ages to have to think - trust me, we got stuck a few times.

4 - Overcooked! All You Can Eat

    • Gives Gordon Ramsay a run for his money
    • Two games in one

Overcooked! All You Can Eat acts as the series' ultimate edition, containing both Overcooked! titles and all of its released DLC - making this one of the best PS5 multiplayer titles if you're a fan of party games. Overcooked! All You Can Eat will certainly test friendships as you try to run a restaurant together in increasingly chaotic environments.

As dishes start to pile up and you face a race against the clock, you'll soon find out how well you can cope under pressure.

Overcooked! is a fun multiplayer experience that supports both local and online co-op with up to four players.

3 - Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 details & key features

  • Platforms: PC, PS5, (coming soon to Xbox Series X|S)
  • Release date: 2023
  • Key features:
    • Captures the essence of D&D
    • Complex characters
    • Four player adventure

Baldur's Gate 3 was one of the biggest hits of 2023, with many people jumping into the rich and deep world created by Larian Studios.

Maybe the best thing about the game is that you can play through the whole campaign with friends. If you play online you can have a party of four, but there is even a two-player split-screen mode. Playing with a pal may take a while to complete the whole game, but it will be an adventure unlike anything else.

2 - Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

    • Gorgeous Borderlands art style
    • Inspired by table-top RPGs
    • Looter shooter

In Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, the chaotically charming Tiny Tina steps back from the well-known Borderlands franchise into her own story inspired by the popular table-top RPG, Dungeons & Dragons.

Fans of Borderlands will be right at home here, featuring the familiar art style and humour that fans have come to love, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands lets you choose from a variety of multi-classes and weapon proficiencies to help you in the quest to destroy the evil Dragon Lord.
