The next Far Cry could be a spin-off of a spin-off
Although the long-running Far Cry doesn't often overcomplicate itself, when it does, it really does. It seems that Ubisoft knows (for the most part) what players want from the series - they want a looming villain that offers some serious satisfaction after they get a lesson in manners.
The Far Cry tick list also involves a chance to butcher some wildlife and scrounge crafting materials, finished off with a sprawling open world to explore. It doesn't get much simpler than that, and yet, the games have followed this formula down so many roads that players have a tendency to feel like they've seen it all before.
All of that could be about to change, though, as the next Far Cry project could be a little bit experimental. Although we're seemingly revisiting the past, it'll bring back the fan-favourite Captain Laserhawk to kick some futuristic ass.
Captain Laserhawk may be returning to Far Cry
A new leak has indicated that the next game to come from the Far Cry series could be a spin-off of an obscure Far Cry deep cut on Netflix. Yes, that would technically make the game a spin-off of a spin-off. We're struggling to keep up.
A new PEGI rating has appeared online for an Ubisoft game titled "Captain Laserhawk Niji Warrior". It's sparked speculation that the lead character from Netflix's animated series Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix could be leading his own game.
According to PEGI, the game is releasing on December 2023 (newsflash, we're past that now,) but hints at a PC-only release that features "moderate violence in which human-like characters are shot using laser guns." Even though PEGI has successfully made the cool sound incredibly uncool, at least it's a window into what the expected game could look like.
The Far Cry spinoff could be a free-to-play live-service game
Much to the dismay of some fans, the PEGI rating of the bizarre spin-off points to microtransactions that allow players to purchase new cosmetic items, indicating that there could be serious pressure on online play.
It'd be a real first for Far Cry - but then again, maybe Ubisoft is trying to make Captain Laserhawk his own deal. Either way, it seems like a new game is coming, spinning off from the Netflix series that spun off of the Far Cry spin-off Blood Dragon. Now our heads are spinning, but maybe we'll have made sense of it all by the time the game launches. Maybe.
