Since the beginning of time, Mario has been saving Princess Peach from the scaly grip of Bowser. Castle after castle, goomba after goomba, pipe by pipe, Mario's adventures have always been a rescue mission for his beloved Princess.

But what if the shoe was on the opposite foot? Would Peach trek through fields of venomous plants, climb through slimy pipes, hop over lava-infested dungeons, and trade blows with a fanged Koopa to save her man?

Well, we're about to find out, as new leaks suggest that a new 2D Super Mario game is in development, and this time, Peach will be given the chance to get her pink frilly dress dirty.

Previous leaks have filtered in over the last few weeks, insinuating that another 2D Mario game is in the works. It would be a case of returning to the franchise's roots and adding to the experience that made us all fall in love with the red hat and blue dungarees.

Now, a leaker named Zippo has pulled the trigger on a range of leaks, and one details that Peach will join Mario, Luigi, and Toad as playable characters in the 2D world.

This will be the first time that Princess Peach will serve as a 2D playable character in nearly 35 years, with her last squashed cameo coming in 1988's Super Mario Bros. 2.

New 2D Mario Game Is Three Years In The Making

According to Zippo, the unannounced title - which is presumed to be exclusive to Nintendo Switch - is apparently three years in development too.

The leaker claimed that iconic 2D Mario developers Takashi Tezuka and Hiroyuki Kimura have been producing this game for the last three years, with the intention to bring it out in the 2023/24 fiscal year (April-April).

Zippo also included some key art in his blog post, indicating that the game will also see Mario take on his modern-day look that we see in the Chris Pratt-ified movie, with a new set of trainers on. Apart from Super Mario Maker and the occasional 2D segment, it's been a while since we've had some 2D Mario love.
