Even though nobody asked for it, the DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been an absolute firecracker. Bringing fan-favourite maps to the familiar mechanics of the game with brand new anti-gravity sections is a stroke of genius, and while we all expected a brand new game, Nintendo plugged away on making 8 Deluxe the biggest and best Mario Kart game in history. And it's working.

The slow trickle of new content to the game has helped to keep it one of the best sellers in Nintendo's roster, and as they've finally added Birdo to the lineup of racers, it simply keeps getting bigger and better.

But it looks like it doesn't end at Birdo. Not even close.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe looks to add more characters in DLC

The surprise reveal that a new racer would come to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in its ongoing DLC packs was fantastic to experience, but it looks as though Birdo's introduction doesn't spell the end of new racers for the game.

Players are now installing the latest pack of maps to come to the game, and as excited as they are to take to the track in the classic maps, there's something else that has caught their attention. Reporting on Twitter, players have revealed that the racer roster for the game has changed to include Birdo - and five empty spaces on the character selection screen. We're getting five more racers in the game.

This is the closest thing to a confirmation of the number of racers coming to the game as we'll get, so fans have begun to theorise and hope for their favourite racers to land in the game.

Fans want a Smash Bros-level crossover in Mario Kart

In the replies to reports of the five empty slots in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, players are posting their wishes for the new racers coming to the game - and they're pretty mad.

The likes of Diddy Kong, Sonic, Pikachu, Kirby, and even Samus are appearing on fan wishlists, and it looks like hopes are getting high for a wealth of Nintendo characters to come to the game. You guys are going to be really disappointed when we inevitably get Rose Gold Baby Peach.
