Ask any Call of Duty player who played the game during the Coronavirus crisis of 2020, and they'll undoubtedly tell you that it was the absolute peak of Warzone.
Casting our minds back to March of that year, much of the world was settling itself in for lengthy lockdowns - restrictions on where you could go, who you could see, and what you could do. Video games were a constant for many, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons arriving at the perfect time for some.
But that wasn't the only game to arrive on the scene right when it was needed. Call of Duty Warzone also came into the picture, and for many, the series hasn't risen to the same heights since.
Now, some gamers are reminiscing so much about the 'glory days' of Warzone that they're willing to pay upwards of $1,000 to experience Verdansk again.
Roze-tinted specs
The sentiment arose on the Warzone subreddit, in which user mrbud31 posted a selection of clips playing on Verdansk in Warzone. It's a far cry from where the game is today, now on its third map with overhauled mechanics now that it's based on the newer Modern Warfare 3.
Another user, LetsGoNYR, commented on the post, saying, “I would pay $1000 for this right now. No sloppy seizure movement and ridiculous skins." They aren't the only one, with several other users supporting the statement by saying they would also throw down a similar amount of cash to play the game in this state once again.
The entire thread seems to be filled with players remembering back to the early days of Warzone through rose-tinted spectacles. After all, there was the whole Roze-skin debacle that's not too dissimilar from what we're currently seeing in Warzone with camouflage operator skins.
Still, while $1,000 seems like a ridiculous amount of dough to splash on an old version of Warzone, it speaks to how much the Call of Duty community is willing Verdansk back into existence.
Could Verdansk come back soon?
Recently, Fortnite proved that bringing back old and nostalgic content can do big things for battle royale shooters like Warzone. Fortnite OG brought back millions of lapsed players when it resurrected the original map for a time, letting players recreate their favourite memories from years gone by.
It looks like Activision could be trying something similar with Verdansk soon, as early reports suggest that the original Warzone map is planned to return later this year with the release of Treyarch's entry in the series.
This is all yet to be confirmed by the developer, but if true, players could be getting their wish after all. Let's just hope Activision doesn't actually charge $1,000 for the privilege, yeah?
