With even more to do in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you will need a control scheme that suits you so that locating Shrines, using your new abilities, and navigating the world doesn't become a chore.

To tailor the control scheme a little more to your own preferences in the game, check out our rundown about remapping control buttons.

How to change the buttons

Aside from an option to swap the jump and run buttons, the only way to remap buttons in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is to do it through the Nintendo Switch's system settings

The in-game options menu offers you the ability to invert the ability controls, and swap the jump and run actions, so it's B and X respectively.

However, for more comprehensive changes, you'll need to head to the Switch's own settings:

  • From the Switch home screen, select 'Settings' from the bottom.
  • In the new menu, scroll down to 'Controls and Sensors'.
  • Select 'Change Button Mapping' and alter your chosen settings

Essentially, you change which buttons are mapped where in this menu. So for example, if you change the button mapping so the Y button is now the A button, pressing A will now attack instead.

It's worth noting that changing these will alter the control schemes for all games, so it's worth saving your changes as a preset specifically for Tears of the Kingdom.

We also have a breakdown of how to acquire the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Autobuild ability, which lets you save constructions to build quickly.
