If you’re just starting out on your journey in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you’ll likely know that Shrines were a huge part of the gameplay loop in Breath of the Wild - but are they in TotK too, and if so, just how many are there?

Now that we have our hands on the game, we can finally confirm whether or not these fan-favorite puzzle boxes return, so keep reading to learn about how many Shrines Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has.

Are there Shrines in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom?

The short answer is yes, Zelda: Tears of the Kindom sees the return of Shrines in the game. However, these Shrines will see Link take on a whole new set of challenges to those we encountered in Breath of the Wild.

With a whole new set of Rune abilities to unlock including Ultrahand, Fuse, Recall, and Ascend, players will need to think a little more creatively to solve the puzzles included in these new Shrines, as Nintendo has gone above and beyond to create a plethora of puzzle boxes that will challenge the player in new ways.

How many Shrines are in the game?

In total, there's 152 Shrines in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. That’s a hefty chunk more than those included in Breath of the Wild, which had just over 120 Shrines before the DLC added a few more.

It’s possible to see several Shrines scattered across the overworld of Hyrule from just the first few hours of the game. In addition, there are also several Shrines dotted around the Sky Islands that float above the clouds.

So, no matter how far your playthrough you are, you should have plenty of undiscovered Shrines left to distract you from the main story.

If you're already into your journey and are unsure of where to locate these puzzle entrances, be sure to check out all of our Shrine location guides for map coordinates throughout each of Hyrule's many regions:
