The Pokemon series has taken small, but necessary steps in recent entries to modernize its gameplay and get with the times. This year’s mainline instalments, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, are perhaps the boldest yet, offering a wide-open world to explore for the first time in the franchise.

However, recent titles have introduced some new mechanics, some of which many have loved, while others have been slated. One of the more controversial has been Dynamaxing, which was seen in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Many are wondering whether this feature has returned to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, which luckily, we have the answer to.

Dynamaxing was introduced back in Pokémon Sword and Shield, and allowed players in certain battles to grow their Pokemon into towering behemoths mid-battle. It was a feature some players loved, whilst others criticized its overpowered capabilities that did little to the actual fight.

While no one can argue it doesn’t look cool, it was clearly a divisive mechanic, and as a result, Dynamaxing and Gigantomaxing have not been added to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. However, the games do have their own unique mechanic and that is called Terastallizing.

This move allows you to encase your Pokemon in a diamond and change both their physical look and type. The process is known as the Terastal Phenomenon, and while not as overpowered as Dynamaxing, is a unique feature many Pokémon Scarlet and Violet players are rallying behind.

To do this, players simply need to obtain a Tera Orb and use it on the Pokémon of their choice. This will make them look crystallized and change them to the Tera Type, which will give them a boost to moves that the Tera Type. It can be a powerful tool, especially if used in the right circumstance. While you may be disappointed Pokemon Scarlet and Violet has done away with Dynamaxing, hopefully, this new mechanic proves to just be as interesting.
