While Modern Warfare 2 is attracting many players, namely for its popular multiplayer and well-received campaign, that’s not all it has to offer. Buried at the bottom of the game’s main menu, a little unknown version of the series’ Spec Ops mode resides for players to jump into and discover.

Known simply as Cooperative in Modern Warfare 2, this little mode allows players to team up and take on a variety of missions. They play out similarly to campaign missions but allow for more freedom and creativity when tackling them. If you didn’t know they were there, or simply want to know a little more about them, then here’s everything you need to know about Spec Ops in Modern Warfare 2.

What Is Spec Ops In Modern Warfare 2

As mentioned before, this time around Spec Ops takes the guise of Cooperative, and in its current state, allows two players to jump into the action. Currently, there are three missions, each offering a different for teams. The experience is drastically different from the campaign and multiplayer components too.

For example, at the beginning of a match, players will have to choose a kit to use. These are broken down into three categories and can be levelled up via use in Spec Ops. Each comes with different equipment, allowing you to create the perfect strategy for each mission. Here are the three that are available at Modern Warfare 2’s launch:

  • Assault Kit: Comes bundled with an Armor Box, a Mini-Juggernaut, and Health Stims.
  • Medic Kit: Comes bundled with a Revive Pistol, Bomb Drone, and Claymores.
  • Recon Kit: Comes bundled with a Snapshot Pulse, Restock Perk, and Heartbeat Sensor.

These allow you to coordinate with your partner and aim to reach the three-star ranking that is available in each Spec Ops mission. At launch, there are only three missions, and they are the following:

  • Low Profile: Stealthily infiltrate a town and collect evidence trackable via a Geiger counter. Once completed, you will need to exfiltrate to succeed.
  • Denied Area: Destroy several SAM towers stopping allied reinforcements from landing. After finishing this objective, reach the plane to leave.
  • Defender: Mt. Zaya: Defend an observatory against waves of enemies, with the ability to purchase killstreaks, armor plates, and self-revive kits in between waves.

Each of these offers a completely different Spec Ops experience in Modern Warfare 2. You could be attempting stealth to steal nuclear components, or you can be left to defend a highly volatile position. Fighting against AI in much bigger spaces in the campaign allows for an extra degree of freedom, which some players may find refreshing.

While it’s not been confirmed if these are specifically tied into the Spec Ops mode, developer Infinity Ward has confirmed Raids will be coming to Modern Warfare 2 on December 14th, 2022. As part of the Season 1 Reloaded update, these are set to be more intense missions with waves of enemies to take down and multiple objectives.

At present, the contents of the mode are remaining tightly under wraps, but expect more information on Raids in Modern Warfare 2 as its release date slowly looms towards us. In the meantime, you can try your hand at attempting to reach three stars in the current selection of Spec Ops missions available in Modern Warfare 2.
